The German government plans to charter another floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal for winter 2023/24, bringing the total number to five, as part of its strategy to diversify away from Russian energy.

The fifth state-owned floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will come to Wilhelmshaven, where another FSRU is already planned, and has a capacity of 5 billion cubic metres per year, said the Economy Ministry on Thursday.

BERLIN, Sept 1 (Reuters) - The German government plans to charter another floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal for winter 2023/24, bringing the total number to five, as part of its strategy to diversify away from Russian energy.

The fifth state-owned floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) will come to Wilhelmshaven, where another FSRU is already planned, and has a capacity of 5 billion cubic metres per year, said the Economy Ministry on Thursday.

"All the steps we take to free ourselves as quickly as possible from the clutches of Russian imports are more necessary than ever," said Economy Minister Robert Habeck in announcing that the ministry's selection of companies to manage the FSRU.

Germany in May leased four floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) for the import of at least 5 billion cubic metres a year each of seaborne gas, of which two are due to become available this year.

Europe making necessary alternative arrangements, since Russia is an unreliable supplier and wants to play games

eventually Europe will realize that there's other gas suppliers nearby that ARE reliable, like Israel and Qatar

btw doesn't sound like the sanctions will end soon, otherwise Germany wouldn't go to all the trouble of these alternate arrangements, right? Gonna be a Black Christmas in Russia this year, the first of many to come ...

Russia is only hitting back at a bunch of countries that are trying to destroy her.
That is normal.

Russia still has it in for Germany after Germany betrayed Russia in WW2. Russia and Germany were supposed to conquer all of Europe like BFF’s, instead Russia had to settle for controlling only some northern Europe countries for only 4 decades.

In addition to the five Government funded floating LNG terminals (Floating Storage and Re-gasification Units, or FSRU), Germany is also getting three more privately funded.

From those eight, three are on track to be operating before the end of the year.

They are moving at Tesla speed to get the job done. A special law was passed to speed up the construction of the needed infrastructure, and it is now full steam ahead.

For example, one of the first of the new FSRUs planned to go operational at Willhelmshaven needed a 26 Km pipeline to the gas storage cavern. It was originally estimated to be a six year project, but with the new law, it will now be operational by year’s end.

“LOL. Gonna be a cold Christmas in the EU.”

For their sake, I’m hoping for a very cold winter so they’ll freeze their butts off in the dark.

I say, “for their sake”, because sometimes you have to hit a mule upside the head with a 2x4 in order to get its attention and regain some sense.

I’m also in need of a bit of schadenfreude.

Germany has used Russian gas for such a brief interval, return to normal sources will not be an overly difficult task. It is mostly mental

eventually Europe will realize that there's other gas suppliers nearby that ARE reliable, like Israel and Qatar

As if either could come close to produce the volume of oil that Russia could, let alone get it to Europe at anywhere near the cost Russia does through its pipelines. You don't give a damn how much the people in Europe and here are going to suffer because of the sanction war with Russia.

You're another victim of Russian Derangement Syndrome.

Whoever is selling at the market right now, but since there is a huge new buyer entering the field now then I guess soon also from the US.

A huge new buyer in the market will encourage producers to invest in more production capability.

Huh ... If Pedo Joe weren’t an anti-American sleazebag ... if only F Joe Biden hadn’t done everything he can to shut down American gas/oil production ...

We could make serious bank selling them LNG.
