The owners of an Ohio bakery celebrated on Thursday their $36.5 million victory over the liberal arts institution Oberlin College in a defamation case, declaring that 'David has overcome Goliath'.
The college had been ordered to pay after jurors ruled that it had defamed Gibson's Bakery by describing the institution as racist, after the store owner chased down three black students who stole from the business in November 2016.
Finally, in a statement on Thursday, the college announced it 'has initiated payment in full of the $36.59 million judgment in the Gibson's Bakery case and is awaiting payment information from the plaintiffs.
A lawyer for the bakery celebrated the huge settlement.
With legal fees and interest, the amount rose to over $36.5 million.
Oberlin College had tried to appeal the case to the Ohio Supreme Court, which announced on August 30 that it would not take up the issue.

Take that, you dirty rat.
They must have big bucks to easily just pay this. They should have settled out of court after first court hearing.
Fork it over. Chop Chop!
I was so disappointed to learn that the Ohio Chamber of Commerce (or a local branch) filed a brief on behalf of Oberlin.
Companies like Gibson Bakery are the backbone of the Chambers. It was clear that Oberlin College directed boycotts that hurt sales and lead to layoffs.
If Oberlin is paying the settlement before trying to appeal the Ohio rulings in Federal court, I’m wondering if the school cut a deal with the insurance carrier to get it out of the case.
Actually, they didn’t. They have endowments and such that are hugely valuable on paper, but it turns out they didn’t actually have a lot of liquid cash or readily saleable assets - that’s why they were desperately appealing even though the courts shot them down repeatedly.
This is a big win for decent Americans and a big loss for commie filth...
Show the Gibson’s the money. The big fat money.
Oberlin and other colleges provide marketing dollars and ‘incentives’ to Chambers of Commerce; actual businesses less so.
Gibson Bakery still needs to relocate, for their own safety and peace of mind. Oberlin is going to remain a hostile neighbor, no matter what the courts decide. It may be like the Chic Fil A phenomenon, where there is no threat fron the business, but sheep minded students will be encouraged to say they hate it anyway.
They have a $1 billion endowment, mostly from payoff / contributions of people who want to get there kids in there. It is somewhat competitive despite the weird politics.
I am sure they could have settled for way less before it went to the jury and significantly less even after the verdict. However, Oberlin presumably did not want to admit to anything.
Thank you for that important insight.
However, the Chamber could have at least remained neutral on the issue. To me it is unconscionable that it would side against a small business in this case.
Remember this is the college where some 'student' put on a sheet and all the professors and kids huddled in fear of the KKK. Friggin hoax. (note: the KKK was White democrats - men who stayed democrat after 1964 - men like Robert Bryd - a KKK recruiter to was elected to the Senate for years as a democrat - big friend of Biden's)
Like that idiot Jussie Smollett and his noose. Anyone who believed white men wearing MAGA hats would be walking around the South Side of Chicago at 3 AM carrying a noose - - is nuts - and even stupider than Oberlin professors.
“’has initiated payment in full of the $36.59 million judgment in the Gibson’s Bakery case and is awaiting payment information from the plaintiffs.”
Dont get too excited—”initiated payment” isn’t them same as “made payment”. There is plenty of ways this liberal shitskool can still delay.
I am certain their endowment is many times this and they property value alone as well. Sadly this won’t bankrupt them as it should
Best news of the day.
‘has initiated payment in full’
WTF does that mean?
Sweet😊
