The travel guide version seemed bizarre; the official version is more believable, with actions from foolish to heroic.

A .22 pistol can be used to kill a polar bear. It helps if you have some skill with the pistol, and know where to shoot the bear.

Gee, there goes my plan to only carry my .22 pistol when I go elephant hunting this year.

Or if you are close enough to stick the muzzle in his ear before you pull the trigger...

Would have been better to shoot the bear with a flare.

Hey- that rhymes!!!

The problem is the same if you use a .22 on a person. They don’t die quickly enough and they aren’t disabled. You can be pounded to death by your enraged target before it dies.

This is one of three documented cases where firing a pistol to defend against a bear, failed.

There are over 120 documented cases where firing the pistol succeeded in driving off or killing the bear.

You would think a polar bear would know better than use a 22

If you do go up against a polar bear with a .22 pistol, make sure the front sight is filed off...
