Most bear attacks are not surprise charges from extremely close range.

In the coastal rainforest, you can be 30 feet from a bear and neither of you know it. They usually take off....and it’s scary how quietly they do it.

What use is a firearm, out in the wild, that is not “hot”?

Rifle sighted in at 150 yards. Thats plenty close to a bear.

“The can should be located behind the target, similar to where the brain is located on a bear.”

I must have scanned over where that location is in the article.

Bears.

Two weeks ago I was driving through my ‘subdivision’ (we live out of town and just East is National Forest) I spotted a Mother bear with two cubs in the road — 1:30 PM...

Have been out of state for 10 days until last evening, I reviewed our motion detector/light/camera (A Feit unit from Costco) and son-of-a-gun there she was with her two cubs at 2:30 AM a few mornings ago...

Thanks for the article.

Here’s a defensive move that works..... shoot your hunting partner in the leg and run. Bear eats your longtime hunting partner.

Don't carry more gun than you are capable of using effectively.

An Air Weight S&W .357 Mag is not something you're likely to fire more than 5 rounds from at the range.

The S&W .44 Magnum w 4" barrel is not something I'm going to be able to get a follow up shot off, on target, in time to stop a charging griz.

I carry, train, and practice with an S&W 686 (357 mag) 7rd w 4" barrel. Using 200gr hardcast rounds when in Griz country.

I was walking along a trail when I suddenly came upon a Grizzly bear.

I quickly broke off a branch from a pine tree and threw it at the bear.

The bear picked up the branch and said, “Ah….good…..garnish.”

“Most bear attacks are not surprise charges from extremely close range.”

So, no need to train for close range attacks?

My go-to bear gun is the Glock 20 loaded with Buffalo Bore 220 gr. You can do a mag dump in a few seconds. This is the most popular bear defense pistol in Alaska. Only the old timers stubbornly cling to wheel guns.

My favorite bear defense story came from P. Hope, AK along the Arctic coast in the extreme NW corner of the state. An elderly Eskimo woman was walking in the village during a typical January blizzard. It was dark and she was headed to visit a sick friend. She was bundled up in an ankle length parka with the hood up and thick fur mittens. A polar bear jumped her from behind and knocked the face down onto the ground. The bear straddled her and flipped her over. With a snarling polar bear on top of you and ready to make a meal of you what do you do? She balled up her fist inside the mitten and shoved it as far into the bears mouth as she could, uncurled her fist, and withdrew her hand leaving the large fur mitten lodged in the bears throat. The bear asphyxiated and she survived. Well played madam.

Here in Alaska, twice I have blk bears come in on me. They crawl in real slow with front quarters down and butt in the air; ears twittering back and forth independently. First time I didn't have a gun and kept waving and yelling. The bear retreated when he was within 6 feet of me, then crawled back in a second time and finally retreated and wandered off into the brush. It will make the hair on your neck stand.

Common to see grizzly bear along salmon streams. Had them 10 yards from me waiting for me to catch a fish; which they take. I've never felt threatened by grizzly bear. Most in blueberries run from people as they get shot at a lot.

I have a bunch of Indian friends who talk to grizzly bear up close all the time; makes me nervous. They claim bear only eat white people but I remember one Indian who got treed and always had an 06 with him.

People shoot most bear they see on the spot. They break into cabins and cause numerous problems. They are not supposed to be around people.

I lived in the Alaskan interior for two years.

If you are in a gun fight with a bear, you are doing it wrong.

They are faster than you think, smart than we give them credit for and can suck up bullets like a tree trunk.

Nobody knows anything any more.
They all forget what happened years ago concerning kids and bears.
My mother and her sisters, when they wer young, went blueberrying on top of the moutain here. They always carried a pot and spoon. If a bear came, they would just bang on the pot with the spoon. They were never attacked by a bear over a span of 15 years, never ever. Duhhhh!
Nobody knows anything like it never hapenned before to kids. Gimme a break.
These guys must be city slickers.
I got a bear comes every year into my rasberry patches, eats all the berries and falls asleep in the patch, & leaves the next morning.
These guys better go talk to some mountain folk about them bears coz they dont know beans about bears.

Guys, ‘bear’ in this article really means a charging human. Bears kill around 11 Americans every year. 15,000+ Americans are murdered every year by subhuman monsters. Prepare to defend yourselves against subhumans not bears. Bears are sweet animals as long as you dont try to steal their dinner.

I was walking to the pickup on my first day of work with the US Forest Service.

I was on a three man Trail Crew.

A coworker walked by with a revolver strapped to his side.

I asked my partner on the crew if that guy thought he was Jesse James.

My partner hissed at me to shut up.

When we got in the pickup he told me that the guy with the pistol had been on a four man trail crew that got between a Grizzly sow and her cub.

He was the only one who could walk to get help.

He carried a 357 revolver after that when he went into the woods.

I was on a Trail Crew with the US Forest Service.

I was carrying a brush saw one day because there was a thick growth of Huckleberry bushes across the trail.

I was a ways ahead of my partner.

I strapped on the cutting chaps and reached down to pull the starting cord on the saw.

I pulled the cord and a bear exploded out of the bushes.

Bears have explosive starting power.

I did exactly what I wasn’t supposed to do and ran back down the trail yelling “Bear! Bear!”.

I don’t know what kind of bear it was.

We were in Grizzly country.

I don’t know why the bear didn’t take me.

Maybe it was surprised by the sound of the saw.
