Vulnerable Democrat Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) imploded during a television debate when a Michigan news anchor pressed her about the recent bombshell report revealing she resides in an apartment owned by a “lobbyist” and campaign donor, who is also registered — with his family — to vote at the same address and works for a company receiving tens of million in government funding.
WDIV-TV held a television debate on Sunday between Slotkin and her Republican opponent state Sen. Tom Barrett. The anchor in charge of asking questions brought up the recent report that revealed Slotkin moved into a residence owned by Jerry Hollister, an executive at a Lansing-based company that received tens of millions in federal funding and has donated to her campaign.
Hollister’s LinkedIn stated that he is in charge of “developing Congres[s]ional relationships” at the Lansing-based company. Additionally, he and his family are registered to vote at the same address where Slotkin now resides.
However, when asked, Slotkin, trying to defend herself, blew up, claiming that the attacks on her were “political desperation” since she claimed to be paying fair market value. Barrett also took a chance to attack the Democrats by saying there were over 1,500 available apartments in Lansing, Michigan, but Slotkin lives in the one owned by the executive who donates to her campaign.

So how many broken laws and campaign violations is that exactly?
I agree. I hate to sound like I’m supporting a democrat, because I have no such inclination, but she actually raised a really good point. If she is paying rent there, and she is getting nothing free or even below what would be fair market value, then the appearance of impropriety is really only somewhat minor. Her opponent is right, it still a bit fishy because why would she be renting from this person, of all places to rent, but that’s just bad optics, not true impropriety.
Pretty bad judgment on her part, regardless of any lease.
Wow, the host did a really nice non-partisan job there.
A TV anchor actually doing the job of a journalist? He/she will be audited for not following Party Rules.

Yes it could be bad optics. But then again it is probably some kind of trap. Get your opponent to make an unfounded accusation so you can point at them and say “ look, he’s lying about me again, just like every other bad thing he says about me.” Nothing is a coincidence or innocent in politics today. If she is living there with her husband, paying fair market rent, then her opponent simply took the bait and made himself look bad. Democrats are way better at this than we are.
Frankly, “bad optics”, as you put it, is the best one can say about the Congress in general. Forget that Ceasar’s wife, and above reproach business. Obviously for you and for others, in the good ole USA anything goes.

This tidbit seems like it's as big a deal as Slotkin's living arrangement.
Forget about whether or not she's paying rent. As someone who works in an industry where the U.S. and state governments are major clients, I would steer clear of a relationship like this at all costs even if the government official was paying a higher rent than the market value.
The only thing missing from this story is that she sublets the home to Frank Luntz. :-P
She’s my Congresswoman. I wish she was vulnerable, but I’m afraid that Ingham County is too Blue for Tom Barrett to topple her.
An implosion? I didn’t see that at all. This will probably backfire on the republican. In Michigan the voters will look at that as an unfair attack on their precious democrat and turn out to vote for her.
Cankles Slotkin is a perfect example of how cancerous/evil our politicians have become.
