A megayacht linked to a sanctioned Russian oligarch has dropped anchor in Hong Kong, amid efforts by the West to seize the luxury assets of Russian elites in allied ports as the war in Ukraine drags on.

The Nord, a nearly 142-meter (466-foot) yacht that is said to be one of the world’s largest, was spotted by CNN on Friday in Hong Kong’s waters, just minutes from the central downtown district. The vessel is estimated to be worth at least $500 million and widely believed to belong to Alexey Mordashov, an industrial billionaire, according to a yacht broker who spoke with CNN.

The yacht, 1.5 times the size of an American football field, arrived in Hong Kong on Wednesday from the Russian port of Vladivostok, according to the Chinese city’s Marine Department.

There has been rumored to be a yacht that is nominally owned by an oligarch, but is actually Putin’s. Is this it?

It's not the Deep State's property. Hands off.

A spokesman for Hong Kong’s marine department told the Financial Times:

“Certain countries may impose unilateral sanctions against certain places on the basis of their own considerations,” but the Hong Kong government “does not implement, nor do we have the legal authority to take action on, unilateral sanctions imposed by other jurisdictions.”

The Terror invasion supporter needs to down size to a boat no one cares about.

Ships cannot endlessly roam the oceans like Captain Nemo's Nautilus, never touching port. Instead, they need to put in for fuel, food and other provisions, parts, and crew changes and shore leave. And megayachts tend to get noticed wherever they go.

What’s the reasoning for seizing Russian yachts? I understand if they are banned from docking in the U.S. or allied ports.

kinda what I was thinking.. the way to port is pretty much a perfunctory expedition.

To a greater degree than people realize, ships at sea are in an often lawless environment. A phantom megayacht that has turned off its locator beacon is not at all unusual.

No doubt.

It’s been many years, but those radio beacons in the fog of night matter.

My father was a graduate of Kings Point and a US merchant mariner for years before becoming a lawyer. At 22, as a third mate in an era before radar and GPS, he had to navigate his ship at night through a crowded, fogbound English Channel on the way from Baltimore to Hamburg, relying on marine radio beacons, fog horns, and the occasional glimpse of a light house or another ship's running lights. Even decades later, he could recall every aspect of that run through the Channel in complete detail.

No doubt he enjoyed telling those stories. Very cool.

These sanctions are nothing but a poorly disguised attempt to steal other peoples assets.

I have zero love for Russia, or the Ukraine for that matter. BUT.... wrong is wrong.

What’s the reason for banning 23 y/o girls from playing in tennis tournaments because of their place of birth?

Yep. Notice how no evidence of wrongdoing is even offered. Simply stating that the owner is of Russian nationality is all the “justification” one needs to steal their property now.

Its sad to see what a pathetic and lawless state much of the West has sunken to.
