Levi’s Leans From 1880s With Racist Slogan Sold at Auction for $76K

A pair of well-worn 19th-century Levi’s jeans — featuring a racist slogan — has sold at an auction for $76,000.

Kyle Hauper, a 23-year-old vintage clothing collector from San Diego, snapped up the rare jeans dating from the 1880s at the Durango Vintage Festivus auction in New Mexico on Oct. 1.

The second-hand jeans — hailed as “the holy grail of vintage denim collecting” — were discovered inside an abandoned mineshaft several years ago and are believed to be one of the oldest known Levi’s from that era.

If you believe the label is legitimate.
I don’t put much stock in labeling being honest in any era.

Jeans were made all over the globe by a lot of different people, just like they’re today.

‘Slapping on’ the appropriate label to sell in a specific region.......can be a gold mine for a producer.
In this case: somebody who wants their jeans produced by white labor.(Was the capital invested, white also? Just asking for a friend)

Precisely.

Only fools go around judging everyone and every word spoken, especially from an Era they knew nothing about.

That’s interesting.

Somehow I was hoping that ‘thereby hangs a tale’ - and the tale would be much more interesting than the jeans...

Any chance for copper to make a comeback here?

Sure. There always is.

The problem is the USA has become very hostile to mining, even when it would be extremely profitable.

You can always find someone to sue to stop a potential mine.

The risks involved become far to great unless the potential profit is astronomical.

I know of three large copper deposits (with associated other metals) which have not been developed purely for political reasons. They are large, rich deposits.

One in Wisconsin near Crandon.

One in Arizona near Tucson.

One in Minnesota (as mentioned by a colleague) near the BWCA.

Everyone talking about the “racist slogan”. Nobody talking about the 23-year-old with 80K of disposable income to spend on a pair of old pants.

A label printed on the interior of the pocket declares: “the only kind made by White Labor”

Doesn’t that mean that modern-day Levi’s must be canceled now because they were “founded upon racism?” I read the rules and that’s what it says.

In 1880, a pair of jeans like that cost $1.80. Eighty years later they cost new $2.60.

Today the cost of a brand new pair is $70, depending on which store sells them. And they have not been made in the USA for decades.

Consider the rate of inflation between 1880 and 1960.
Now consider the rate of inflation from 1960 to today. Horrifying!

The anti-slavery slogan “Free Soil, free men, free labor” comes to mind.

True. And in this case what comes to mind is the work involved in say flipping a house versus reselling a pair of jeans. OTOH the real work with the jeans was learning and understanding that market and then being willing to a take the risk.

Yes. I think people specialize in things like this, like those who specialize in certain periods or styles of art. I don’t think she dropped that much without knowing exactly what she might get for it.
