Fox News Host Confronts GOP's Scalise on Proposed Medicare Cuts: 'Betrayal'
Newsweek ^ | 10/16/22 | THOMAS KIKA

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, a Louisiana Republican, on Sunday was confronted over potential voter discontent with the GOP's plans for Medicare.

Representative Scalise appeared on Fox News Sunday to discuss the upcoming midterm elections. As the minority whip, he is considered to be the second-highest-ranking Republican in the House.

As soon as his interview began, host Shannon Bream pressed Scalise over the party's plans for Medicare and Social Security should they regain the House majority in this year's midterms. Bream presented the lawmaker with a message from a concerned Fox News viewer, who characterized the GOP's plan for Medicare as a potential "betrayal."

"He's a Republican, he's very worried about you cutting his Medicare," Bream said as she relayed the message she purported to have received on Twitter. "He says it's a dealbreaker and a betrayal by the GOP."

In June, the Republican Study Committee, of which Scalise is a member, released a budget plan that included numerous suggested reforms for Medicare and Social Security, including raising the eligibility ages for each program to 67 and 70, respectively. The proposal further called for withholding payments for individuals who retire early or had a certain level of income, and also suggested using private funding sources for Social Security to lower income taxes.

What are the alternatives?

Severely cut other government spending? The left wouldn’t stand for that.

Print more money, driving the inflation rate even higher? The country won’t stand for that.

I say this as a 63 year old.

At times I think that “Republican” organizations such as this exist to provide DemocRATS with timely talking points.

The Original Social Security Program enacted in the 1930’s says that if SS ever spends its Reserve and goes to Pay as You Go - EVERYONE takes a 20% Cut in Benefits.

Inflation has pushed that point forward.

Unless something is done - within 5 years everyone will take a 20% CUT in benefits. Across the Board.

I work in medicine. Medicare is the money grows on trees program tgat has got to be unsustainable. From what I see it’s like in the late 80s when the military was trying to Outspend the ussr the spending was maniacal but with at least a fraud waste and abuse section even if in name only. This doesn’t have tgat. It’s insane.

This garbage has been floating around for a while. Someone from the left posted a photoshopped document purporting to be the GOP “Commitment to America”.
Leftists on social media picked it up and ran with it.
Even the media “fact checkers” gave it a “Pants on Fire” rating.

Sooner or later you have to “pay the piper”. Democrats have been spending like drunken sailors the past 2 years. Cuts have to start somewhere otherwise this callers retirement benefits will be useless.

I know I might get flamed for pointing it out, but the GOP House
Study Committee proposing to raise Social Security age to 70 would be a 100 percent cut for people aged 65-70. What if those people can’t find a job in this world where few if any employers hire people in their 50s let alone mid-to-late 60s? How do they make ends meet till they’re 70? Not everybody was fortunate enough to get a government job that lets you retire in your 50d with a secure pension.

The whole idea of raising the Social Securitybage to 70 is to ensure that fewer people will ever get Social Security because they’ll die before they’re eligible

If the GOP doesn’t want the Dems running ads against the GOP on Social Security, GOP politicians need to stop proposing cuts in Social Security

Why don’t they cut foreign aid instead - starting with Ukraine?

So what if those billions sent to Ukraine had been put in Social Security? What if the democrats and the elite had not driven inflation so high?

Indeed he is. You can’t be in a leadership position in the Republican Party unless you’re a weasel.

About a week or so ago Kevin McCarthy was being interviewed on Fox about his so-called Commitment to America. All he did throughout the interview was dodge and deflect, avoiding anything about specifics or defining actions. It was all a bunch of deflective BS. He’s a total weasel.

“ So what if those billions sent to Ukraine had been put in Social Security?”

I agree with you. I wish Republican leaders would say the same thing. Let McConnell know you’re not on board with his policy of showering money on Ukraine and you think the American people need help first.
