Democrat Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney’s idea to combat inflation: eat Chef Boyardee
The New York Post ^ | November 7, 2022 | Carl Campanile

Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney said when inflation put the squeeze on his family he popped a can of Chef Boyardee – and declared “that’s what families have to do.

The House Dems campaign fundraising chief, who is also a five-term incumbent representing the Hudson Valley, gave a glowing endorsement Saturday for Beefaroni and other Chef Boyardee canned pasta products when asked about his plans “to fight inflation.”

“Well, I grew up in a family where if the gas price went up, the food price went down, so by this time of the week we’d be eating Chef Boyardee if that budget wasn’t gonna change,” Maloney told Halston Media’s owner Brett Freeman in an interview. “So that’s what families have to do.”

Let ‘em eat cheap ravioli while we spend lots more printy-money and jack up the interest rates to try to stop the effects from materializing.

I believe this has gone up in price as well, Congressman.

Yes, about 30% higher per can than a year ago.

Wouldn’t homemade spaghetti be cheaper than that canned slop? And better?

What kid didn’t love SpaghettiOs?

Hot dogs in spaghetti was another big favorite.

But what happened to the big push for better nutrition?

And what happens when even Chef Boyardee is too expensive?

I remember a month or so ago when the store brand of veggies at Greers (an Alabama-based discount chain serving Pensacola) went from around 86 cents to $1.06 all of a sudden. And canned asparagus (always more expensive) is nearly two dollars!

Let’s go Brandon!

Exactly. I cooked a package of spaghetti and a jar of Prego last night. Threw in some frozen meatballs. With two of us eating, there’s still enough left over for another meal, and then some. Cheap, cheap meals...and very easy.

“What kid didn’t love SpaghettiOs?”

Not me.

My guilty pleasure was Dinty Moore beef stew.

I bought some Chef-Boyardee earlier this year when it was on a super sale (for just in case). It’s in the pantry, and I hope I never have to crack it open. Never. But it’s there if we ever need it. God help us if we do.

If we had some eggs we could have bacon and eggs for breakfast if we had some bacon.

No offense, but ewww. I hate beef stew, even if it’s homemade, so the canned version is something I could only do in the most desperate of times. As in, it would probably be nice if I was living in a concentration camp. Or need it for survival otherwise. But not a minute before I was that desperate.

No offense taken. But we were talking about when we were KIDS. As kids, we ate all kinds of crap. I liked Dinty Moore beef stew because it was easy to prepare (just pour it into a pan and heat it up) and eat it. I guess I liked all that salt.

My son wanted Spaghetti-Ohs and didn’t like them, so they wound up in my lunch box the next day. I hadn’t had them in years, so it was a nice bit of nostalgia.
