WASHINGTON—Attorney General Merrick Garland will appoint a special counsel to determine whether former President Donald Trump should face charges stemming from Justice Department probes, according to a person familiar with the matter.
A formal announcement, which is expected by Friday afternoon, would come three days after Mr. Trump announced another bid for the presidency and would mark the naming of the third independent prosecutor in five years to examine issues involving Mr. Trump. The exact scope of the special counsel’s remit and who it would be couldn’t be determined.
The move reflects the sensitivity of Mr. Garland overseeing any investigation into Mr. Trump now that he is a declared presidential candidate. President Biden, who has said he intends to run for re-election in 2024, nominated Mr. Garland to head the Justice Department in part for the former judge’s promise to insulate the agency from political influence.
Some legal experts have anticipated such an appointment. Regulations governing special counsels provide for the attorney general to name an outsider if he determines that the investigation or prosecution presents a conflict of interest for the department and recusals of certain officials wouldn’t be enough to overcome the concerns.

A Special Counsel will likely be a registered Independent or Republican, and perhaps have zero donation history to GOPe.
They aren’t stupid. They know a Republican is not enough for the appearance of independence.
I view this news as overall profoundly positive. If they had a slam dunk case, this would not be going on.
Do not forget. This is very important. They have access to exit polls and relevant polling data in general FOR DEMOCRATS. If the GOP does not solve the drop box or mail in challenge, Garland may view Trump as someone who can generate Dem mail in votes. They may not want him indicted. They may want him to run.

So NOW he wants a special counsel AFTER the election is over. There was never any there there...so now he’s going to punt.
Gee do we get to camp out on the SP lawn like the Abortion Protestors did to the US Supreme Court Judges?
What if you're not in trees but, say, mowing the lawns of their homes, or mopping the hallways of their propaganda organs, or occupying chairs in the officer's club? A lot of people have had everything taken away from them and have nothing left to lose.
If they charge him with a federal crime, he will be re-elected in a massive landslide. Upon his inauguration, he will go through these traitorous scoundrels like a raging forest fire and destroy all of them.
Special Counsel = Drag it out as long as possible while spouting the line in congressional hearings “we do not comment on current investigations”.
The Republicans should take it 110% to prosecute these corrupt RATs from the house side and let them know that by doing this, any Republicans gaining a position will prosecute them even if they are on their death bed. (I would suggest a bounty on their heads and dangle their bodies from an overpass on a major road into DC.)
The house needs to defund the whole outfit. Don’t give it another effing dime.

2-This insulates Garland and Wray from being questioned by House Republicans on any matter regarding weaponization and politicization of the DoJ/FBI.
Who will run it? Maybe Jeff Sessions or Chris Christie?

Yet, they are announcing they “got him this time” now that Trump declared for POTUS.
However, it’s not political interference.....like the recent raid.....or announcement about loan forgiveness...or FTX.....or Biden stuff..
Like Afghanistan? They are powerless against a domestic war. Not to mention, they and their families live on open bases that depend on commercial truckers, food deliveries, contractor support in industrial parks.
