‘Total Disruption’ for Google as New Chatbot Challenges Tech Giant’s Monopoly
CONSERVATIVEFIGHTERS ^ | December 7, 2022 | Chief Editor

The computer developer who created Gmail is predicting Google may have only a year or two left before ‘total disruption’ of its search engine occurs after the release of a sophisticated chatbot that uses artificial intelligence (AI).

Last week ChatGPT was released by OpenAI, a company co-founded by Elon Musk in 2015. It responds to text prompts from users and can be asked to write essays, lyrics for songs, stories, marketing pitches, scripts, complaint letters and even poetry.

Its ability to answer complex questions has led some to wonder if it could challenge Google’s search engine monopoly. Critics feel Google’s search engine has been too focused on maximizing revenue through prominent advertising and too cautious about incorporating AI into how it responds to users’ searches.

Paul Buchheit, 45, a developer who was behind Gmail, believes Google’s search engine dominance in particular could soon be disrupted.

‘Google may be only a year or two away from total disruption. AI will eliminate the search engine result page, which is where they make most of their money,’ he tweeted. ‘Even if they catch up on AI, they can’t fully deploy it without destroying the most valuable part of their business!’ he continued.

A core way that Google makes money is from advertisers paying to have their links displayed alongside the results of a search query result in the hope that a user clicks on them.

‘The old search engine backend will be used by the AI to gather relevant information and links, which will then be summarized for the user. It’s like asking a professional human researcher to do the work, except the AI will instantly do what would take many minutes for a human,’ Bucheit explained.

I won’t trust that.

Original links for me, or nothing.

They left out censoring search results to favor Marxist causes.

“Google’s search engine dominance in particular could soon be disrupted.”

Let’s hope so. I hope Musk’s next project is an uncensored search engine.

OK, so what if Google’s algorithms for censorship screw up the training data for the AI?
G.I.G.O. applies as well as the datasets having to be carefully curated: consensus does not equal truth, but only consensus.

Interesting stuff.
I had noticed that Google (Alphabet?) stock has taken a pounding in 2022. While IBM stock has been quite stable.
This is not consistent with what all the smartest-guy-in-the-room types had been saying for the last 20 years.

Original links from who? Google? Trust those any more?

Umm, do people not understand that these AI bots are USING google to answer those complex questions? Where do they think the AI gets all the information that it is absorbing? They are not crawling the web themselves looking for the info.

This one needs correction:
A core way that Google makes money is from extorting advertisers to pay more than paying smaller companies can afford to have their links displayed alongside the results of a search query result in the hope that a user clicks on them.

I use Brave Search and Startpage.

Going to websites, I choose how credible they are.

This leads to a link to download it. But due to high demand it is temporarily shut down.

Much more than Google will be upended by AI. We should expect computational progress based on better software with tighter code, rather than just better hardware as typical. Ultimately, we’ll develop an AI compiling engine which translates high level computer language into optimally tight code. Those of us old enough to have coded at machine level know the magic of really tight code.

Another disruptive aspect of AI will be stripping illusions from our reality. So much of our reality is built on illusion or even intentional fiction, especially in regard to how we speak and write about race and culture while couching it all in the popular fiction of political correctness. We see some of it now, because language-based AIs seem to naturally fall into what we describe as “racism”. We really can’t handle the truth, can we?

Gonna be interesting…

Dave, I see you are searching for parts that fit a 45ACP pistol.
Given your past searches for drug components, I cannot display the data.

Stop trying Dave or I will call the police.....

Sooner or later?

I dunno about all that. It sort of depends on what/where/why/how this AI ChatBox gets its data. If it uses Google algorithms, Google will serve the results. If it uses Wikipedia or Yelp or just about any user-created content, it can be thoroughly manipulated. I mean it has to get its data from somewhere to start with. Either way, someone is going to get paid for that type of content delivery. It is entirely possible Google will lose a lot of revenues.

I understand this thing, AI in general, could get very advanced and do a lot more than just routine mundane search/result type things. But someone is going to make money and generate power from it that much is certain.

But can it cook, clean house, mow the lawn...?

The AI will do whatever it is programmed to do. It might even filter out everything except the top advertisers. Basically, google algorithms given steroids.

There’s no reason to limit an AI to Google searches. It would most likely use all the search engines, and as well crawl the web with its own engine.

Not just text but maps and especially photo interpretation. I can tell a lot about you from the satellite images of your house and neighborhood, but an AI would be able to make much richer and more detailed inferences than I.
