Indiana Michigan Power ^ | 12/24/2022

Extremely cold temperatures across the region have created extraordinary demands on the power system. We are asking businesses and the public to help by immediately reducing electricity use as much as possible without sacrificing safety.

Same with TVA.

So why has this recently become a problem?

Back in the 70s it was really cold...I remember it was -40 degrees in Buffalo one Sunday.

And it was cold here, like 5 degrees, and in the South.

But we never lost power because it was cold or hot outside...lightning struck our power line and it caught on fire...it was one of the few times we lost power.

Are we becoming a third world country? I think I know how you’d answer.

But hey - you told me that ugly wind farm you put up near Chicago was going to solve all our energy needs as you shut down the coal plants.

Indiana has NOT broken any low temp records this week.
Never had power problems before, either.

The government and utilities have ONE job - provide power in desperate times and they’re falling down on the job.

We need a pluralist society.

One part for watermelons and one for joyful hydrocarbon burners.

Not exactly sure but my guess is the capacity just has not kept up with population growth demand. Many reasons for that including increasing government energy regulations.

We had 250 million back then.

The last nuclear power plant build was Watts Bar, finished in 1996 with additional capacity added in 2015.

They should have been building a whole lot more than they did.

We could have helped out our Aussie and Canuk friends...they have the largest and third largest uranium reserves.

***They should have been building a whole lot more than they did.***

Betcha they wish they had not canceled the Black Fox nuke plant to be built near Inola OK back in the 1970s.

The Screaming memes and fainthearts got it shut down before the ground work was finished.

Here it is Christmas weekend. It’s miserably cold all throughout the nation. Christmas hams and turkeys need to be cooked, people have relatives visiting, etc. And, our nation’s power grids are failing.

I know! I have a great idea! Let’s push everyone into electric vehicles. THAT will save the planet AND the snail darter fish. Win, Win for everyone!

Our government institutions are all so corrupt they are going to governed us into third-world status. THEY will be living in well-heated, well-lit mansions, while we starve and freeze hoping the last candle burns long enough for us to finish heating up our dinner of crickets and meal worms.

I’ve always told myself not to be a “hater” and that there has to be good in most people even though they are misguided. I’ve gotten over that naive view. I hate these people. They want to destroy us and grind us down under the heel of their boot. It is a good thing vengeance is the Lord’s and he is a merciful God, because if vengeance was mine, I would bring wrath down on all that are working to destroy us as they mock Him.

I & M advertises that it can generate 2,620 M/W of power by coal, 2,278 M/W by nuclear, 450 M/W by wind, 35 M/W by solar and 22 M/W by hydro.

Their problem, I suspect, is their contracts with several large electric arc steel plants. The power to operate these plants when the temperature is 10° below zero and the wind gusting at 40 mph would be enormous (and their penalty for an industrial power outage would be even more enormous).

Indiana Michigan Power is a sister company under American Electric Power. They have shut down many thousands of coal-fired power plants over the last ten years or so. MANY thousands of mwh’s!

Americans must be feeling discouraged.

Millions of Americans have bought millions of low-wattage bulbs and millions of low-energy appliances, and we still find ourselves freezing in the dark.

Quite a few coal plants have been shut down, and solar and wind are unreliable.

That said, this last system had plenty of sustained cold wind! Sheesh!
