Jan. 6 transcript: Mnuchin briefly discussed 25th Amendment removal of Trump
The Hill ^ | 12/28/2022 | JULIA SHAPERO

Former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said he briefly talked about using the 25th Amendment to remove former President Trump from power during a discussion with former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the wake of the Jan. 6 riot.

But Mnuchin, who served as Treasury secretary from the beginning of the Trump presidency to its end, said he did not seriously consider using the measure to remove Trump from office.

“It came up very briefly in our conversation,” Mnuchin told the Jan. 6 committee in his deposition, released on Tuesday. “We both believed that the best outcome was a normal transition of power, which was working, and neither one of us contemplated in any serious format the 25th Amendment.”

“The only research I did out of curiosity was I googled it,” Munchin said, adding, “I remember my general counsel asking me if we wanted him to do extensive research on it. I said, no, not at this point.”

Only idiots “seriously consider” that because it wouldn’t work. It can literally only work if the President is comatose or something and can’t write a letter.

If the President is conscious, then it would require a larger majority in Congress than simple impeachment.

“It can literally only work if the President is comatose or something and can’t write a letter.”

Like Joe Biden?

Why are the Swamp RATS and their “media” toadies still trying to overthrow President Trump? The last I heard, he is no longer employed by the “Let’s Go Brandon” government.

I find it ironic that it is Biden who will likely be removed by the 25th Amendment when he become a complete vegetable - by DEMOCRATS.

Even Biden could probably manage to scribble “I like to sniff kids and I’m Joey B, I approve this message. Dr Jill sez I can still be President!”

Uh, hello? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that any thread about Mnuchin must include photos of wife Louise. Rules, folks, rules.

So now we have Treasury Secretaries deciding the presidency?

When did that start?

The writers of the 25th were acutely aware of its potential for ‘shenanigans’ so they wrote it to make it exceptionally difficult to invoke for a conscious President.

Before the nuclear age, there was no need for the President to be able to take action on a moment’s or even a day’s notice. We weren’t likely to be invaded by either Canada or Mexico. So a nearly helpless Wilson in 1919 wasn’t really a threat to national security.

But Eisenhower’s heart attacks and the nightmare scenario of JFK’s surviving the assassination attempt but as ‘vegetable’ meant they had to have a way to remove a helpless President.

As you say, if the President objects to being removed, he writes a letter to that effect and both houses of Congress have to vote by 2/3rds majority to remove him. The fact that the process has to be initiated by the President’s own VP and Cabinet also limits the chances for the 25th to be used as a way to stage a coup.

But the democrats certainly were prepared to try. From the moment of their election there were calls for Trump and Pence to be removed from office so that Speaker Pelosi could be installed as President. And before that they talked of not approving VP Agnew’s replacement by Ford to accomplish overturning the 49-state wipeout they suffered in 1972.

“He briefly talked about it but never seriously considered using the 25th Amendment??”

He should be discussing it now with application to the current president.

Does anyone else get really OVER this stuff?

This is not about law, legal, or constitution.
If it were, Biden family is ripe for pickin!

Its about getting the one man who upset their golden goose nest.
The government has become so corrupt, they come for the gold and power.. Mercy, can’t have an honest patriot in the highest seat!

There is no one left to stop them.. It’s a den of thieves. And Trump had to show up.. With our corrupt habits, we can get rid of him and continue the carnage.

And That is where they are!

And I’m to the point of dragging every one of them to the pit, owned by their master!

“But the democrats certainly were prepared to try.”

Nah, the democrats are bad, but their leadership isn’t that stupid that they couldn’t do the math and realize there was no chance of success. Sure, they talked about using the 25th amendment, just like some Republicans talk about it. But since they aren’t stupid enough to think it would actually work, I can only conclude such talk is just red meat to satisfy or distract their base.

Of course they knew there was no chance of success, but the same was true of both impeachments. But the talk hammered home the idea (along with the Russian hoax) that Trump’s election and Presidency were illegitimate and that no patriotic (in their eyes) American was bound to follow his leadership.

Talk of his removal, from the first to virtually the last day of his Presidency pretty much set the tone for Trump’s term. His walking slowly down a wet ramp was solid proof that he was unfit to serve, FBJ’s pointless wandering on stage, falling up AF1’s stairs, apparent inability to count to three...no big deal.

And don’t even think about investigating Hunter’s laptop! That would be divisive and partisan.

And yet, very little if any talk of the 25th in relation
to Biden.

I swear our entire government has only a flicker of brain
activity going on these days.

Most people on this forum have briefly talked about it - concluding it was just an example of silliness by the clueless. Even if someone might have tried it on Trump, it was more difficult than impeachment and he’d just have to submit a letter to undo it.

He's just doing a little housecleaning here, is all. Someone must know he and Pompeo discussed it and was planning on using it against Pompeo (since he keeps teasing he's thinking about running).
