Speaker race headed toward dramatic floor election
Roll Call ^ | Dec 31 | By Lindsey McPherson

Posted on 12/31/2022 8:12:31 AM PST by RandFan

Whether or not Kevin McCarthy becomes speaker under the incoming House Republican majority, the Jan. 3 floor election to determine who will take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi is poised to be the most dramatic in a century.

A small faction of “never Kevin” Republicans is threatening to ensure McCarthy is denied the 218 votes needed to win the speaker’s election. But a larger group of Republicans who have pledged to vote for “only Kevin” are making clear they won’t support any other returning members of Congress for the role.

The two positions are seemingly irreconcilable, and members on both sides of the intra-party standoff predict the speaker’s election will require multiple ballots for the first time since 1923.

McCarthy and his allies are still trying to negotiate a truce that will allow him to get the votes he needs on the first ballot, but as of Friday afternoon no compromise had been reached.

The House rules package, which the chamber will vote on after a speaker is elected, has become the primary focus of negotiations in which McCarthy could offer some concessions to his opponents.

But McCarthy’s detractors are not all on the same page, making it difficult to come up with a rules package that would satisfy enough of those who have yet to commit to supporting his speaker bid without turning off the members who already support him.

Five Republicans — Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Matt Rosendale of Montana and Ralph Norman of South Carolina — have publicly broadcast plans to vote against McCarthy on Jan. 3. The five have organized as a bloc and vowed McCarthy can’t peel them off individually; any concessions he offers would be debated among all five.

Heard Kevin is giving in to the vacate the speaker demand which is the least he could do. The fact that he is being so adamantly opposed goes to show you he will be as bad or worse of a speaker than we all think. He will not share power and he is beholden to open borders crowd.

So who do you recommend? First they need 180 votes. Second they need to want the job. Both requirements are not easy.

I think people forget that the senate is not ours. Not a dang thing will get done in two years. This will be called the wasted period.

My thought exactly.

I’d rather see Newt nominated than President Trump.

There is a very real possibility that Liz Cheney will be the next Speaker.
The GOP is so infiltrated that there is no real leadership and the few wise ones who see what is happening will be forever blocked from power.

I don’t think we’re going to be able to stop him at this point. We’ve got more house cleaning to do before we can actually advance a conservative agenda.

Perhaps the current cases before the Supreme Court will put the political class on notice that they are not immune from prosecution and it will weed out some of the worst sellouts.

The very reason the GOP cannot win elections; they insist on being divided, unlike the Democrats when it comes to moving through their agenda. I’m not a McCarthy fan at all, and have no appreciation for RINOS; yet, I see 5 House Members bent on the continued erosion of the GOP. Democrats may squabble amongst one another, but when it comes time to vote, they unite and succeed.

Who ever you want as Speaker should be whoever you want as the next POTUS. The way Biden is defying the US Constitution, duly enacted laws of Congress; and establishing an autocratic presidency; Congress would be remiss in their duties and responsibilities if they didn’t impeach both Biden and Harris.

Watch for the Republicans snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

They’re very good at it.

Yep even him. As soon as the rumor started about his affair with his secretary, or whoever, the guy cowered down and removed himself. Yet that bastard that porked the Chinese spy, Mr fart face is still sitting pretty in the house. See what I mean. Spineless, weasels and cowards. That’s why I have become a fan of Congressman Santos. Dish out the same medicine as the other side and they start squealing like stuck pigs! Only the left-wing communist POS cannot do no wrong. But God forbid if any conservative lies. I like santos fighting spirit and that is one reason why I say hang in there bud, hang in there!

Where were these asswipes in Nov. after the election?
Where were these asswipes when the Republican Committee met a week or so after the election, BEHIND CLOSED DOORS, and nominated McCarthy?
Guess they couldn’t get the face time then that they can now.

And for any of you FReepers, particularly you card carrying Republicans who believe that ANY of these slimebuckets gives a tinker’s damn about what’s in your or the nation’s best interest, WAKE UP!!!

“Every republican voted majority leader in the past has been a spineless POS.”

You think Boehner was a spineless POS. Oh, yeah; you’re right! He and Ryan. And wasn’t of of them a pedophile who had to resign? Something about when he used to coach sports or something...?

Democrats go with their leader determined to accomplish the goals of their base. Republicans go with their swishy leaders more inclined to sell out their base and “compromise” with Democrats when in the majority.
