Speaker race headed toward dramatic floor election
Roll Call ^ | Dec 31 | By Lindsey McPherson

Posted on 12/31/2022 8:12:31 AM PST by RandFan

Whether or not Kevin McCarthy becomes speaker under the incoming House Republican majority, the Jan. 3 floor election to determine who will take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi is poised to be the most dramatic in a century.

A small faction of “never Kevin” Republicans is threatening to ensure McCarthy is denied the 218 votes needed to win the speaker’s election. But a larger group of Republicans who have pledged to vote for “only Kevin” are making clear they won’t support any other returning members of Congress for the role.

The two positions are seemingly irreconcilable, and members on both sides of the intra-party standoff predict the speaker’s election will require multiple ballots for the first time since 1923.

McCarthy and his allies are still trying to negotiate a truce that will allow him to get the votes he needs on the first ballot, but as of Friday afternoon no compromise had been reached.

The House rules package, which the chamber will vote on after a speaker is elected, has become the primary focus of negotiations in which McCarthy could offer some concessions to his opponents.

But McCarthy’s detractors are not all on the same page, making it difficult to come up with a rules package that would satisfy enough of those who have yet to commit to supporting his speaker bid without turning off the members who already support him.

Five Republicans — Reps. Andy Biggs of Arizona, Bob Good of Virginia, Matt Gaetz of Florida, Matt Rosendale of Montana and Ralph Norman of South Carolina — have publicly broadcast plans to vote against McCarthy on Jan. 3. The five have organized as a bloc and vowed McCarthy can’t peel them off individually; any concessions he offers would be debated among all five.

Kevin McCarthy needs to join his good buddies Ryan and Cantor... If not elsewhere, at least on the back row.

JMHO.

Get the popcorn ready.

Neither side are backing down.

“I don’t see any scenario where I’d support Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker. McCarthy has a track record of cutting backdoor deals with Democrats,” Biggs tweeted Thursday, along with a Fox News clip in which he made the same points.

Pfft! What difference does it make…Every republican voted majority leader in the past has been a spineless POS. Every ONE of them! Only a handful of DC conservative folk care about the American citizens….a handful…pitiful! McCarthy, once elected again will go back to his old habits. How many times were we promised a fighting spirit by our newly elected representatives only to have them give us bitter waters. The swamp is tooooo damn strong and $$$$$ entices the corrupt spineless conservative weasels.

Kevin McCarthy was the Republican Majority Leader under Speaker Paul Ryan. It was a nightmare. Why would anyone think that it would be different with Kevin McCarthy as Speaker?

No matter who is elected speaker, that person will have to fight the swamp. All patriots must show a united front to fight that swamp - - what else can we do?

Lessee...535 votes for the dems and .5 for the pubs. I can smell that shart from here, and I’m in Ohio. Sheesh.

Are we at that point? Are we at the point where it is a binary choice between McCarthy and Hakeem?

If the GOP does not hang together then we may hang separately with Hakeem as speaker.

I don’t pretend to know all the machinations that may happen behind the scenes, but if it’s either McCarthy or a Democrat speaker, would you folks actually prefer Hakeem because of McCarthy’s shortcomings?

And are we at the point where the speaker election comes down to McCarthy or Hakeem, with no other Republican possibility?

“...take the gavel from Nancy Pelosi...”

The gavel won’t mean anything unless the speaker is to turn away from compromising allowing liberal ideal to remain and prosper. By the appearance with extended indecision of who is going to get blamed for the republican mishandling of running (?) the house just displays the ineptness and cowardice of the people voted in to do the best interest for the people and their efforts to just keep their job by going with a flow they didn’t create and are continually getting drowned with trepidation.

Meet the new boss...... same as the old boss.

We just had a bunch of “Republicans” vote (again) to put our children and grandchildren into massive debt for a ridiculous spending bill that GROWS the government and further taxes the American people (inflation).

Until we take back the GOP and RNC and get rid of the uniparty globalists we stand NO CHANCE of making major reforms in our own nation regardless of who is “Speaker”.

Isn’t it within their power to submit Donald J Trump’s name to be Speaker? I am not saying yeah or nay but the shear joy of hearing the news media go bananas would be worth it!
