Officials in Capitola are holding a news conference at 1 p.m. after high swells caused widespread destruction along the Santa Cruz County coast.
On Jan. 5, the remnants of a bomb cyclone that struck hundreds of miles off the coast of California brought high swell and destructive winds that caused damage to homes, businesses and iconic tourist attractions.

Bad things can happen when you live by an angry sea.

In the old days people didn’t put up multimillion dollar buildings near the angry seas. But now that the rich can tax our dwindling middle class to subsidize unrealistically low insurance rates, the problem is widespread.
Every now and then Mother Nature let’s us know who is boss. When that happens, the outcome is not good.
But this is a peaceful, exquisite, and alluring location on the coast of N. Cali. Should not be happening there since that is paradise. CO2, white males and their wives, along with limited government types are to blame.

Meh, somebody bought land knowing it was certain to be flooded.
Someone issued building permits regardless.
No flood insurance should be permitted under the circumstances.
Such a shame to see Capitola hit so hard. One of the videos said it is the wettest 10 day stretch in San Fran since 1871.
Capitola was our favorite summer weekend destination with the kids when they were little. We ate a lot of restaurants there, too. The kids loved boogie boarding to the south side of the stone breakwater.
The locals need caution when building near the rough seas. Capitola and Aptos are near the rough seas.
