Children could be left without welfare checks due to homeschooling, the government has been warned, as new figures show a surge in the numbers being educated at home.
England’s children’s commissioner and education unions have raised concerns over the safeguarding of home-educated pupils and warned some could drop off the radar of authorities without increased protections.
Numbers of home-educated students have jumped by 40 per cent since 2018, Freedom of Information requests reveal. In the 171 local authorities that provided data, there were 81,250 children learning at home in 2022 compared to 57,531 four years ago, before the pandemic.
But the true numbers could be higher as...it is not compulsory for parents to inform local authorities.
The government scrapped plans for a formal register when the Schools Bill was abandoned earlier this month.
Parents are not obliged to tell local authorities or schools that they are homeschooling their children, but it is recommended. If schools know a child has been taken out for homeschooling, they are obliged to tell the local council.
...
Dame Rachel de Souza, the children’s commissioner, said ...“Those that choose to exercise their right within the law to home educate are indeed entitled to do that, however, I do think that it is important to know who they are and where they are to make sure that children are accounted for and have support if it is needed.”
...
The union leader said:...“Of particular concern is the potential for safeguarding issues, for example, where children who are not in school are in fact being taught in unregistered settings.”
A Department for Education spokesperson said:...“This will not impact the right of parents who want to educate their children at home, provided it is done with the child’s best interests in mind and the education is suitable.”

The system is evil incarnate so happy days.
You mean the “plandemic”?
This is terrible! How will kids know what pronouns to use without grooming?
“...warned some could drop off the radar of authorities without increased protections.”
It’s true the kids will drop off the radar of authorities, but it has nothing to do with protection. Control.
UK authorities are like TPTB in the USA. They bought into the fable of Covid, and an unintended consequence was home schooling. They achieved one control, but lost another. Too bad. So sad.
Another homeschooling ping. I had no idea that it was so unregulated in Britain.
Every time I watch the National Spelling Bee its a bunch of home schooled kids competing for the title.
Never any from government schools.
homeschooled kids won’t be programmed with the pronoun bs or the freakshow of sexual deviancy?
sounds good to me.
Any parent that remotely loves their children will remove them from the government indoctrination and perversion academies immediately.
(From the article):" Dame Rachel de Souza, the children’s commissioner, said ...“

(My Comment): Expect a further crackdown on independent thought and independent schooling offered by 'home schooling'
as the formal government school system resents and resists their inability to program indoctrination and expose children to uniform 'State thought'.
This is all done under education agencies using the guise of concern for the children and access to resources,
and not concern for children's accelerated and advanced higher learning.
It's a governmental ploy !
Expect the same lame concerns in this country by school systems and school administrators.
I know a lot of kids that were homeschooled. If the parents do their job right, the kids turn out very well adjusted and well educated.
Less children indoctrinated! The horror!
Frankly, the USA would be much better off if parents spoke to their children about what they are learning in school and then helped guide them; versus the lazy parenting that simply expect the system to “educate” their children.
The liberal hand-wringing is so predictable - It *must* be a bad thing that anyone would want to educate their child outside of govt’s dictates...Oh, heavens...think about the children...where are my smelling salts...
More propaganda. The WEF wants home-schooling (tele-school) So that all children, regardless of Country get the same education. COVID was a dry run.
Put the kids up against each other, one on one. Test them and see who comes out on top.
Edu.Gov won’t do that because they know who will come out the winner.
WE DO NOT COPARENT WITH THE GOVERNMENT
"Each element of the Periodic Table has a unique electron configuration. What is this configuration for the following elements?"
Neon
Sodium
Zinc
I took chemistry and am not bad but I was clueless. I didn't even recognize the answer. Another (as best as I can recall);
"1x divided by 5=3x...solve for x. You have 10 seconds"
My answer...and for all algebra equations...was 42.
Now...to the point.
The team that just won the season long championship was a local team comprised of home schooled kids. They beat the next best local High School team....595 points to 230 points. They smoked every team they faced in similar fashion. It was like watching the 1938 Yankees playing the Toledo Mudhens.
A one off? Possibly. But, I don't think home schooled kids are at all lost.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Re: suitable education
Who and what determines a “suitable” education?
