A film provocateur meets the global elite Amid the crowd gathered at the World Economic Forum, Oliver Stone — an unexpected attendee — easily stands out. The filmmaker behind “Wall Street” and “Platoon” has a history of jabbing the political, business and social elite with projects that advance controversial ideas: Think about his films focused on Vladimir Putin, Edward Snowden, John F. Kennedy and more.
Mr. Stone came to Davos with another provocative movie, which advocates for an issue long whispered about here but rarely said aloud: nuclear power as a force for good. In “Nuclear Now!,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, he argues that nuclear has been unfairly maligned by oil companies and others to make the public fearful about its safety.
For Mr. Stone, nuclear is the only existing technology that could help meaningfully bring down carbon emissions from energy, and its danger has been drastically overstated, even in light of disasters like the failure of the Fukushima power plant in 2011.
The Davos crowd appeared eager to listen. The theater screening “Nuclear Now!” here was packed — to the point of attendees sitting on the floor. The film was financed in part by two Davos veterans: Roksana Ciurysek-Gedir, a financier, and Zachary Bogue, a venture capitalist and the husband of the former Yahoo C.E.O. Marissa Mayer.
The appetite for the film may be because of people’s eagerness to find realistic solutions for climate change, according to Mr. Stone. “Despite our investments in renewables, it’s not improving our carbon emissions because we haven’t tackled the core issue — eliminating fossil fuels,” he told DealBook. “Climate change has forced us to take a new look at nuclear power.”

I have to admit that in the late ‘80s I had a fairly low opinion of Oliver Stone. I considered him a left-wing, anti-American commie hack. Not sure whether he’s changed or whether I’ve changed, but I no longer have the same level of disdain for the guy. He’s got a point on nuclear. The fact is that nuclear power is safe, clean and offers tremendous bang for the buck (no pun intended). It’s a damned shame that so much potential in that technology has been ignored and/or squandered over the last 70 years. I also enjoyed Stone’s JFK Revisited documentary on Showtime a year or two ago.
He’s still a left-wing, anti-American commie hack
I think nuclear power will give the world enough time to prefect fusion power from hydrogen. When fusion power is achieved, mankind will have unlimited energy for the rest of his existence. By that time, the technology to go faster than the speed of light will enable the human race to reach the stars.
Hard to believe it has been 24 years since the “Battle in Seattle” with all of the leftists protesting the World Trade Organization.
Oliver Stone is such an IDIOT - he claimed that the CIA killed JFK. What a dope! ...I think.
Didn’t realize that Oliver Stone is 76 years old.

Maybe. But I'll always remember that Oliver Stone enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War, requested - and got - a combat assignment, and was wounded twice in action, all in service to his country.
So he has that going for him.
I have a hard time believing that government intervention won't ruin that as well with regulations, taxes, central control, etc.
Agreed. Also known as “Oliver Stoned”. Still nutty as a bowl of Pecans.
If the thorium molten-salt reactor design were to be built out to scale, we wouldn’t need fusion for a couple thousand years.
Stone a climate zealot! what a shame.
I wouldn't say that. He's simply offering an alternative solution to what the global elites want to do to the fossil industry.
You can't rock the boat unless you're in it.
Like the patents that were bought up by corporations before they could get to market, this and many ideas would never see the light of day
In a way, nuclear power is the perfect face saver for globalist elites who have placed themselves out on the limb of wackadoodle economics based on very minor changes to the climate that are obviously vastly oversold. So they can go down the nuclear power path, conveniently note that climate change is “levelling off” and claim victory. Otherwise we are just stuck on this treadmill of five more years to oblivion for about a century, with just enough morons available in governments around the world to believe that electric everything will solve the nonexistent problems.
I think the fraud is now so transparent even some of the heavy hitters are realizing their goose is cooked. The natural result will be a huge swing in public opinion and they will have no further relevance as people start saying “oh those people” instead of “lead us oh wise ones.”
In other words, they will become like us. Imagine that.
Why does he have to say this to a room filled with the smartest humans in the Milky Way?
Commercial fusion power has been 20 years away for the last 60+ years, and I expect it will be for at least the next 60.
Man, I hope that is where we’re at. Because where we’re headed with government essentially ending ICE transportation by diktat is going to put us in a world of hurt sooner rather than later, probably within a decade.
