Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis proposed changes to his state's criminal justice laws on Thursday, including making child rapists eligible for the death penalty and reducing the number of jurors required to dole out capital punishment.
Citing the case of Parkland school shooter Nikolas Cruz, who was spared execution last year after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict on capital punishment, DeSantis said that only the vast majority or a supermajority of a jury should be required to issue a death sentence.
"One juror should not be able to veto that," DeSantis said at the Miami Police Benevolent Association. "I don't think justice was served in that case. If you're going to have capital [punishment], you have to administer it to the worst of the worst crimes."
Several family members of the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting spoke out against the jury's decision. Dr. Ilan Alhadeff, whose 14-year-old daughter was murdered by Cruz, said he was "disgusted with those jurors" and "disgusted with this system."
"What do we have the death penalty for? What is the purpose of it?" Alhadeff said after Cruz received life in prison.

Anthony Kennedy killed that penalty years ago in one of his most shameful decisions.
It's a publicity stunt.
Currently there are 323 Florida inmates on death row. Let Ron adjudicate those before adding to the backlog.
In such cases, it is the criminal himself who has placed the value of his own life below the fruits of his crime.
Of course, I would only support this with some other significant reforms including (but not limited to) making prosecutorial misconduct punishable by the same sentence being sought when the misconduct occurred.
I support far more widespread use of the death penalty. I don’t believe in warehousing people who won’t be out in society.
Let’s see who slips through the cracks on this one. A 17yr old who has sex with a 16 year old? Statutory “rape” of a child.
I think that is a great idea because, if someone raped my child
and was left alive. I would have to find a way to execute them myself.
That’s disappointing to hear. Florida has one of the quickest needles in the country, which makes me wonder what the backlog is in others.
“One juror should not be able to veto that,”
Definitely agree.
The child rapist issue needs some specifics.
Of course it is a publicity stunt. DeSantis is running for president and this is all aimed at the primary audience.
One oh White’s best lines — the express lane for death penalty! (Haven’t seen him in a while. Last time, a few years ago, he was so absolutely filthy we had to turn the channel.)
DeSantis isn’t running for POTUS in ‘24.
I think he's putting the discussion of child raping out to rope-a-dope the pedo Dims into taking up for child rapists.
I am fine with the death penalty for child rapists (child being defined as below the age of puberty).
I am NOT okay with non-unanimous jury verdicts. The system has plenty of opportunities to strike problem jurors, and I could see this working against patriots at some time in the future. Our system assumes some guilty people will be freed in order to preserve the basic rights of all. That’s the price we pay.
He is doing what he has been doing consistently as the best governor in the country.
Making child rapists eligible for execution would give the rapist an incentive to kill the child to eliminate the witness. And since the age of consent is involved in the legal definition of rape, it might also allow executing people who engage in consensual sex. This is the first bad idea I have heard from DeSantis. I hope it isn’t a trend.
Re#1, rape use to be a capital crime throughout the US. Thanks to the libs, it’s now been downgraded to J walking.
I'm going to LMAO at all the butthurt on this forum when DeSantis throws his hat into the ring after Florida's legislative session concludes in May.
"BUT DESANTIS SAID HE WASN'T GOING TO RUN IF TRUMP RUNS!!! DESANTIS NEEDS TO ENDORSE TRUMP!!!"
(DeSantis never said he wasn't going to run.)
