Just goes to show how Reagan managed to earn the admiration of a lot of liberals, like Noonan.
Reagan was the man for his era. Each era requires its own man to meet the occasion.
Wonderful memories.
An adult, a kind and knowing grandfather figure, a man of few but important words. He spoke precisely and said key things like “I will never be in favor of reducing SSI benefits for THOSE WHO ALREADY RECEIVE THEM.” Sensible, manageable, clear.
Arms reduction only in kind.
He understood the honor and gravity of hte office.
Lol, he was really funny. When he was being operated on after getting shot. He asked the doctor “I hope you aren’t a democrat?” Or something like that.
He was joking with some foreign leader once, and said that he wanted the leader to attend his new movie. He quipped “and bring a friend if you have any” to which the foreign leader said “ I’m sorry I can’t make the grand opening, but I’ll attend the next showing... if there is one”
He used to even Crack up,the liberal press. They stil. Hated him, but did at least enjoy his sense of humor.
Dems hated both Bush presidents ... but groupthink around here also hates them, so it's apparently OK.
Never stepped into the oval office w/o a jacket on. And one of the Presidents who carried on the tradition of wearing a nice pair of American made Allen Edmunds shoes.
Probably the most authentic personality who ever achieved success. I’d highly recommend his autobiography. Actually, any biography would probably be pretty good. I’ve read a couple, and the writers were ultimately smitten.
But they didn't try to destroy them, because the Bushes were deep state, too.
Well, that didn’t mean drunkard. It merely referred to center-right Conservatives in the Democrat Party of the time in opposition to the radical leftist “populists.” Once the latter deposed the former, many formerly sensible Democrats moved to the left to retain their power and party membership (similar to what happened in the attemptive 1930s and 1970s purges).
Curiously, William Jennings Bryan, despite being a moonbat on economics, was a solid religious Christian. He wanted to marry leftist economics with devout Christian doctrine. By the time the execrable Socialist Woodrow Wilson won office, Bryan soon learned the party had no use for that “old fashioned” Christian doctrine, and he was an anachronism. He died right after the Scopes Trial in Tennessee, successfully defending that aforementioned Christian doctrine.
Although he wouldn’t have been happy with Conservative economics, he would’ve been disgusted and horrified with the present-day degenerate Satanic Demonrat Party.
I miss him too. He was the best president of my lifetime.
Nope. Carter is actually quite brilliant and calculating, much like Woodrow Wilson, but trying to hide behind a “good ole boy” religious facade. In corresponding with Gov. Lester Maddox back in the ‘90s, he sent me quite a bit of material exposing “Jimmuh” as an enormous faker and world-class liar. He used whatever means at his disposal to get power, including running an openly racist/race-baiting campaign for Governor in 1970, which was ignored by the media pushing his campaign in 1976 for President. Carter is an evil man, and most certainly did not mean well by any stretch.
The US was a much different country then.
I still miss Ronnie.
I totally get that the image of Carter wasn’t the reality, that’s true of any politician. Politics is a nasty business, and you don’t get to be President without being somewhat ruthless.
“so-and-so is literally hitler” was first applied to GW Bush.
Yes, they tried to destroy him.
GHW Bush destroyed himself. “Read my lips ...” and then he raised taxes anyway.
From the article:
“
Perhaps it was that he simply knew who he was. He also knew who we wanted him to be – and in many ways those were the same thing. This enhanced his success since it was naturally who he already was. Ronald Reagan was authentic and unapologetic about who he was – and who he wasn’t. We as a nation were lucky.
“
To which other presidents does this apply
yes it was ... the massive immigration hadn’t yet had it’s full effect ...
How I miss the Gipper...
Plus the Left hadn’t completely infiltrated and taken over all our institutions yet.
Lots of people got to be President (or nominated) without being ruthless, though that’s becoming less and less so with each passing election cycle. The problem with Carter is that everything he marketed himself to be was a total lie. The media aided in that lie that he was some pleasant, solid Christian, accomplished, center-right Conservative Democrat with appeal across the board. He was really a Communist McGovernite.
