Yes, believing he’d “unite” the party. Look at his 1976 choice. Both were ill-advised, with Bush being far worse. He could’ve given him State for 2 years and dropped him. Remember, too, they were also pressuring him to pick Jerry Ford, “2 Presidents for the price of one.” He shot that down.

He wasn’t a nuclear engineer either, I don’t remember if the media created all this for him or whether he did, but neither of them has fixed the mistakes.
Carter was also pro-abortion, which was pretty well hidden from the voters.
