Higher than what? We pay an effective 60% rate in CA today [fed, state, local, sales, car registration, gas, and shit-tons of misc]. Should the rate be 70%? 80%? Cause I don’t know ANYONE who would be satisfied with 20 cents for every dollar earned.
What is rich? A million? Ten million? That definition will define the number of payers. How many people making $250k/year do you think exist in CA? It’s under 5%. Less than one in twenty. Those ‘rich’ will move elsewhere and take their tax generating businesses with them at the ‘tipping point’. Try to make $250k in a year as a normal, non-celeb businessman. Takes a lot of effort, skill and risk. They’re not stupid, and having to carry 19 strangers on their dime is a damn good reason to relocate. So tell me, what is the magic number?
That kind of bumper-sticker reflexive mentality is inadequate. Lack of long term analysis, or simply ignoring the obvious consequences, is the cause, not tax rates, dude.
