I’ve just finished “Poilu”, Louis Barthas, a memoir of a WWI French enlisted man in the trenches of 1914-18. A worms eye view. What’s is there is staggering, constant suffering and death.
But still they fought the boche. France certainly wasn’t better off while the war was on. And so it is with all wars.
