Washing machines, fridges, freezers face tougher energy standards
The Washington Post via Yahoo ^ | February 10, 2023 | By Steven Mufson

The Biden administration on Friday proposed stricter energy standards for household washing machines, refrigerators and freezers to reduce emissions while also saving consumers money.

The Energy Department said the changes to regulations, which have not been updated in over a decade, would save Americans about $3.5 billion a year on energy and water bills while reducing emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. Homeowners would save an average of $295 over the 14-year life of a new clothes washer and $130 over the life of a new refrigerator.

Appliance companies, however, would need to invest approximately $2 billion over the next three years to update product designs and manufacturing lines to comply with the new standards, the Energy Department conceded. The department estimated that in one of the more likely of five economic scenarios, the compliance costs could cause a 15 percent to 30 percent drop in the industry's value. But it also said that revenue could grow substantially.

The new appliance standards, which could come into effect as early as 2027, are being proposed amid a national furor over possible federal regulation of gas stoves because of their potential health impacts. Conservatives have sought to depict the Biden administration as waging a war on household appliances, but experts in energy efficiency say the standards proposed Friday are long overdue and could produce big savings for consumers.

“The Biden administration on Friday proposed stricter energy standards for household washing machines, refrigerators and freezers to reduce emissions while also saving consumers money.“

Those machines don’t produce emissions

Sounds like the far-left politicians are starting to worry about all the pimping they did for the EV manufacturers. LOL.

If I was an entrepreneur, I would be buying inventory and be in the business of repair. I’d start an appliance junk yard.

I sure wish the government would stop “helping” us?

$2 Billion in investments? Gee. I wonder how the Chinese GE will recover that money?

I just luv it when the people who always make everything more expensive promise that THIS TIME they will save you money. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad.

Not only higher prices, but they won’t last as long.

Washing two loads instead of one reduces emissions?

It’s hard to find a decent washing machine these days. Even the top-loaders are allowing a pitiful amount of water for clothes to swish around in.....I start my washer, let it “fill”, then turn it off and start it again. Double the water is about right to get clothes clean.

I miss the wringer washer I had for years while the kids were growing up. It was great for the diapers! It was an old, square Maytag and worked til the end!

Considering that most white goods manufacturers are designing to a SEVEN YEAR lifespan for their products (washers, dryers, fridges etc.) this is NOT going to do anything except extend the operating cycles of these devices, which are already absurdly long.

For example, a typical dishwasher cycle used to be an hour or thereabouts, but now that cycle is three hours or longer. That same dishwasher used to run for fifteen to twenty years, and now is dead in five to ten years at the longest.

It shows how out-of-touch politicians are if they think that there will be any sort of savings over a fourteen year period, as you will be replacing the device TWICE in that timespan.

The Constitution, and especially the 10th Amendment, presented the Activity Standard for the federal government and it does not abide by the Law.

A pox of DC’s dictates.

I’d start an appliance junk yard.

Back in the 80s, I decided to create my own side gig. I learned how to repair washing machines, then started buying "broken" machines which could be simply and quickly repaired with 15 dollar pumps or solenoids costing as little as $7.95.

My mistake was putting an ad in the old Pennysaver. The phone rang off the wall and soon I was stashing washing machines wherever I could. I ran out of space in the side yard and the machines backed up into our carport.

To my relief, a neighbor called city zoning and put a stop to it.

Thank God it’s just the appliances facing these standards, and not the people designing them, building them, selling them, and purchasing them…

while also saving consumers money

Oh, it will save money alright. Like the "low flow" toilets saved money by not working. The new fridges and freezers won't cool food or will only cool it to some barely-cool temperature.

Meeting the new standards will require putting more China-made semiconductors inside so it’s all good.
