” There’s not enough Li on the planet to realize the greenies wet dream.”

“Carbon and steel are also featured. The lithium content is actually a small amount by weight, and contributes a correspondingly minor part of the cost of Li-ion batteries. Our batteries really should be called nickel batteries,” said Georgeson.

For now, Tesla is definitely not worried about lithium availability, Georgeson confirmed. “There are more than enough reserves of lithium world-wide to serve the growth of the battery markets, including Tesla’s projected needs,” she said. “Even if we wanted to build 10 or 20 Gigafactories, we would not have to search beyond the known reserves that can be economically mined.”

Tesla also expects to source an increasing amount of the material through recycling as battery production ramps up. “The Tesla Gigafactory will incorporate onsite recycling,” Georgeson said.

“ An F-150 battery can power a home for 3 days.”

What happens when the driver needs to go to work?
Is there a second gas powered vehicle to drive?

If only a few homes got EV's, then we're not talking about much storage for grid use anyway. So the discussion is moot.

That's they way I'd rather have it. Free market. People get the car types they want.

I think giving some of my EV battery use to the grid is ridiculous anyway.

So, right... You can have one EV to drive to the market, another EV to power your home in case of emergency. If you want to actually go someplace just rent an ICE from Hertz I guess.

Gonna need a bigger driveway.

“f only a few homes got EV’s, then we’re not talking about much storage for grid use anyway. So the discussion is moot.”

I don’t own an EV. My cars suit idle most days. Trading electricity between prime and night time rates could net me several hundred dollars a month if I owned two EV’s

Silly comment

And suppose that improved battery technology means each provides

There's the box in the flow chart that should be labeled "suddenly a miracle happens". My biggest concern is that improved battery technology would cause Guam to tip over. Or something like that.

If you wanted to do that you could get an inverter and battery storage without an EV. You could charge your battery stack at night from the grid. During the day use power from the batteries instead of the grid. Then in the last hour or so of the peak rate period you could sell whatever's left in your battery storage to the grid (as long as the grid buyback rate during the day is higher than the cheap nighttime rate you pay).

That is really silly. How do you dive a battery storage bank. to the store?

Take an hour and watch this. It provides a first order estimate as to the total amount of materials needed to go “green”.

It’s a Stupid thread... and EV’s are a stupid idea. The entire concept is eligible for mocking and ridicule. Come and talk to us about EV’s when they’re charged with nuclear power. Stop jabbering around with solar, wind and unicorn farts.

We are discussing EV batteries. Don’t divert.

EVs could provide around 15 hours of electricity.

Side note stock up on candles charcoal and Spam until power is back up.

Current EV’s are the compact fluorescent bulb of vehicles, a flawed stopgap on the way to something that may work better,

And further, you have to recharge those vehicles. Until such time they will be useless.

Not if you have a heat pump, electric stove, and electric water heater.
