More pharmacies are closing in the Bay Area, adding to an already shrinking list of stores. Walgreens recently purchased Pharmaca, which once operated at least seven stores in the Bay Area, and will shutter the company’s shops.

Pharmaca’s East Bay locations in Berkeley and Oakland ended pharmacy services Feb. 9, and the store’s retail component is set to end by Feb. 25, according to reporting from the Oaklandside.

The only San Francisco location, in Cole Valley, closed in October 2022. There are Pharmaca locations in Mill Valley, Menlo Park, Sonoma, Napa and Novato. exp-player-logo Read More

Walgreens recently bought Medly Health, which owns Pharmaca, for $19.4 million. The parent company filed for bankruptcy last year.

The Walgreens in Oakland’s Pill Hill on Telegraph Avenue closed in November 2022, and the CVS at 30th and Broadway in Oakland closed last month. The downtown Berkeley CVS closed in June 2022. Walgreens has closed at least 12 stores in San Francisco since the beginning of 2019.

“I think it’s mail order. I get my prescriptions all by mail….”

About 10 years ago, when we joined the big PPO, friends, who were longtime members suggested that whenever possible have our long term/standing rxes mailed to us and the new ones that didn’t require a consultation mailed to us. The copay cost is $10/rx and usually is a 90 day supply.

So about 98% of our rxes are now ordered by us online and are mailed to our home in 2-3 working days.

My wife and I have a small group of drugs, we will probably be on for the rest of our lives.

We order our OTC drugs from Amazon or Costco. The price determines, whom, we buy/order from. Again, the OTC drugs are mailed to us or delivered by our friendly UPS guy.

An interesting online event occurs when I price an OTC from Costco, an Amazon prime screen appears in the upper right hand corner of my monitor showing Amazon’s price with free shipping.

Often, I can get the same OTC product at less price with that little comparison.
