Two of my three children who are now grown successful adults made job, housing, and transportation decisions based on abandoning the need to own an automobile. Good mass transit, light rail, busses, and well planned city transportation infrastructures make that possible. They prefer it. You must live inner city.
Wouldn’t work for me, but when I think about how much money I’ve spent on cars, fuel, maintenance, insurance since my first car in 1984...
If they’re cool with city life, sounds like they made a great choice.
