Senate Republicans nervous about former President Trump’s lead in presidential primary polls are impatiently awaiting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to jump into the race.
GOP lawmakers don’t expect DeSantis to make his move until after the Florida legislative session ends in early May, but the waiting game is playing on nerves, with some thinking DeSantis has lost political momentum since his big reelection win in November.

Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) said he also expects DeSantis to keep his focus on Florida for a while, saying “he’s probably got a window that takes him — if he wants to — into the summer.”
Asked about colleagues’ concerns that more candidates might join the race the longer DeSantis stays on the sidelines, Thune acknowledged, “There is that.”
He pointed to other trade-offs for waiting to jump into the presidential fray.
“There’s an opening and there are others that are may be heading down that path. As the field gets larger, people get out there, they develop support, they get those ground-game grassroots supporters in the early states. You lose the advantage of that” by waiting, Thune said.

A Republican senator who requested anonymity to comment on the machinations of the primary said DeSantis appears to have lost some momentum since November.
The lawmaker said the need to dissuade other candidates from running and to keep the Republican field as small as possible “is a reason to get in early.”

Axios reported late last month that DeSantis appeared to be “losing the favorability edge he opened up in November” after a trio of national polls showed Trump with a double-digit lead over DeSantis.

Just more proof that DeSantis has been bought and paid for by the GOP-E.

Any candidate(s) that the RINOs want will NOT get my vote. And I know I don’t stand alone in this.

They want DeSantis and Trump to destroy each other to clear a path for the Democrat.

So don’t play the game, keep your powder dry for now.
I’ll support both, until it’s time to make a choice.

Anyone who saw DeSantis in Staten Island knows he is VERY green on this national stumping stuff. I was a bit surprised. Ron is not a natural in front of a regular, friendly crowd. Better when he can yell at reporters and be nasty. But he was stiff and even seemed nervous in front of a partisan crowd of LEOs. He needs to do a lot more of this before he is ready to take on anyone, not to mention a gorilla like Trump.

Ronald Reagan didn’t announce until early November 1979. He stumbled out of the gate in Iowa, and had to fire John Sears before the New Hampshire primary, but recovered nicely and easily overcame a weak challenge from George H.W. Bush.

As a Floridian, I think DeSantis would be much better off running in 2028, after two full terms in Tallahassee, then having two years to set up and run a campaign (there is no senatorial contest in FL in 2026).
My guess is that the Pubbies in the Senate want DeSantis to run against Trump, which would bloody the winner enough to ensure he loses to whoever is the Biden replacement in 2024. Since Trump is willing to take the chance, he should be allowed the opportunity to run and regain the White House, and keep Ron in the wings for the future.

They want DeSantis and Trump to destroy each other to clear a path for the DemocratNah.
The "donor community" wants DeSantis, you keep buying into the Democrats vs Republicans illusion.
If they can't get Newsom, it's DeSantis.
On the issues important to the "donor community" (rules based international order, foreign wars for alien peoples, dissolution of American sovereignty) any conceivable Republican or Democrat will toe the line.
The stuff DeSantis has been great on is, in the long run, of no importance to the people who run the show.

At this point it’s a little humorous to read the DC inside republican narrative as they produce their DeSantis messaging. The Hill has an article {SEE HERE} titled “GOP Impatience Grows for DeSantis to Make Move on Trump.”
However, political followers will notice the tell behind the story in the first few sentences:
(WASHINGTON DC) – Senate Republicans nervous about former President Trump’s lead in presidential primary polls are impatiently awaiting Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to jump into the race.
GOP lawmakers don’t expect DeSantis to make his move until after the Florida legislative session ends in early May, but the waiting game is playing on nerves, with some thinking DeSantis has lost political momentum since his big reelection win in November. (link)
Setting aside the reality that Ron DeSantis cannot run for office without first legally abdicating his role as governor as required by Florida law, the “senate republicans” are “nervous.” Gee, I wonder who those senate republicans might be.
Later in the DC script as written, “I suspect he is going to run. I’ve been told that he’s very focused right now — the Florida legislature is in session — he’s very focused on Florida issues,” Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.) said of DeSantis, whom she called “the leader of the Republican Party” after he won an impressive reelection victory in November.”
Ah yes, so very focused on “Florida issues” that Governor Ron DeSantis is in New York, Pennsylvania and Illinois on his not-campaigning, campaigning tour.
The DC stenographers really need to work a little harder to cover the narrative. Just saying.

I’ve been saying this for a year. He is a terrible campaigner and a pretty awful debater too. I’m not surprised.
