CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s Senate passed a bill Monday that would give $25,000 in tax credits to former residents who move back to the state to work.

The Senate passed the bill unanimously and sent it to the House of Delegates.

Those eligible for the tax credit had to live and work in West Virginia for at least 10 years or were born in the state. They had to live outside of the state for at least 10 consecutive years prior to 2023.

Unused portions of the credit could be applied to future tax years. The credit would expire in 2029.

This can only be the state portion of income tax I presume.
Or will this work for property taxes ?

After 10 years - who would want to return? Maybe to retire?

Makes me wonder if stupid states like California and New York might try this.

Wouldn’t it be better to fix the reason they left, instead of bribe them?

The root cause was fixed, like most avoidance techniques with a bandaid.

I lived in WV for 15 years. I would love nothing better than to finish my retirement there. There are idyllic rural communities from the Greenbrier Valley to the Allegheny Highlands. Just no tax base for basic services like police, fire, ems, medical care or even commerce.

I’m 66. Give me a financial incentive to party there 6 months a year. I got plenty of cash. Isn’t that the idea?

Back in the 1990s, Pennsylvania did this. I was born in PA but was living in Manhattan at the time. I got a video tape mailed to me from some PA government department. On the video, Tom Ridge was begging professionals to move back to the state, screaming “We want you back!!” It was embarrassing.

In the early 1960’s we lived in a great condo development on Edge of Fairfax County in Centreville.

The MLK assassination and the area riots after April 4, 1968, started what became a mass movement out of that area.

My mother/dad left to go back to the SW within weeks. She had been a reading teacher.

We left in 1969, and many of our friends living in our area left and often moved to W. Virginia. Some got jobs in the WV area and others commuted to day jobs in the DC area.

Being a short distance to Dulles Airport from W. Va. was a plus for many people moving there.

Many have since moved to Floriduh and might be interested in a 6 mo living in W. Va and 6 mo. in the winter in Floriduh. Most enjoyed living in W. Va except from Thanksgiving to Easter due to often snowy and cold weather.

There is probably one individual who meets these conditions and wants to move back. Probably a returning politician.

Would you trust a politician in West Virginia to sell you a used car?

At the state level, West Virginia’s politics were largely dominated by the Democratic Party from the Great Depression through the 2000s. This was a legacy of West Virginia’s very strong tradition of union membership.

***********************************************************

This state and it’s voters is who we owe our top idiot Joe Manchin to. Add Union corruption into the mix and you can see why West Virginia is dead last in “employment to population” with only 50%.

I think they should think about offering a quarter million to come back to their state. With a quarter million in the bank, they (recipients) could sit on their behind a couple years.

......so, West Virginia proposes to give someone (anyone, doesn’t matter) 25 grand to move back to
