Between 20,000 and 30,000 Russian troops have been killed and wounded in the battle for the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut since it began last summer, Western officials say.
The epic nature of the battle is out of all proportion to Bakhmut's strategic significance, they add.
But after more than six months of grinding, horrific fighting, the future of Bakhmut still hangs in the balance.
Since the fighting began, some 90% of its pre-invasion population has fled.

The Russian propaganda ministry promised its lackeys around the world that Bakhmut was going to be a glorious Russian victory.
That was back in September. Every week it hasn’t fallen has further reduced the credibility of all of Putin’s stooges. Putin needs to fix that or soon the fifth columnists in the West he is counting on will start abandoning him.

Russia has lopped off the arms and legs of the Ukrainians and President Zelensky and General Zalushny insist it is only a flesh wound. This absurdity would normally be great grist for a comedy sketch. But there is nothing humorous about this war, it is a profound tragedy. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are being sacrificed needlessly because NATO wants to use Ukraine as a proxy to fight Russia. And behind these horrendous casualties there are hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian mothers, fathers and siblings mourning the loss of a loved one.
Instead of seeking peace, the globohomos celebrate the death of 30K white Christian males.
