A deadly rampage at a Jehovah's Witnesses hall in Hamburg has put scrutiny on how the gunman was in legal possession of a semi-automatic pistol despite Germany's tightened gun laws and a prior warning about his suspicious behaviour.

The 35-year-old man, whose name was given as Philipp F in accordance with German privacy laws, killed six people and then himself when he opened fire on Thursday (Mar 9) evening.

The exact motives were still unknown, but officials said the gunman had previously expressed his hatred for Jehovah's Witnesses. He had once been a member of their community and had grown up in a religious family in southern Germany.

A determined wacko will do what he’s gonna do, regardless of the country or its laws.

RIP to the deceased Witnesses.

According to this, if you’re over 18 and I have no criminal record, you can buy again. But also, according to the data in the article, less than 2% of the people opt to do so. Remarkable!

German privacy laws....oh we wouldn’t want to breach those! Sometimes I think we’re living in the old National Lampoon’s Politenessman comic strip.

On a much brighter note, at least the victims are getting their theology corrected...

The article is mostly BS.

Within the German system, to get the license....you apply at the local station.

1st step: review of criminal records. Misdemeanors will not disqualify you. Been out of the country for two years? They will ask questions and intensify the background check.

2nd step: Medical review. If you were under treatment for mental issues or have a severe physical problem (meaning you can’t even hold a rifle in a upright position), your doctor will refuse to sign the document.

3rd step: Take and pass a first aid course.

4th step: Attend a gun-training or hunting course (of your choosing).

At this conclusion, you present the documents, and the police issue a local license. You sign a document saying you have a gun safe in the house (with one single key) and will volunteer for a gun audit at any time (day or night). These audits rarely if ever occur, but it’s on your back to square away where your weapons are.

I will note...in the regional German news on this guy in Hamburg....a fair number of people knowing him...considered him eccentric. They didn’t say the word ‘crazy’. It’s going to be some debate now about the eccentric ‘scale’ and how you handle these people in the license business in the future.

Interesting info. It would appear you have first-hand knowledge of the sort that would require being in Germany for an appreciable period of time.
