Russian dictator Vladimir Putin’s dreams of resurrecting the Soviet Union could actually be going quite the opposite direction with the majority of inhabitants of five of the Federation’s regions supporting the idea of breaking away and proclaiming independence

According to the survey, 72.1 percent of respondees in the Kaliningrad oblast want to break away from the Russian Federation. In Ingria, 66.2 percent of respondees wanted their oblast to gain independence. In Ural, the percentage amounted to 68.2 percent, in Syberia to 63.9 percent, and in the Kuban oblast to 55.7 percent.

History may remember 1991 as only phase one of the collapse of the Soviet Empire. It looks like Putin is leading Russia to the path of complete disintegration.

I think after Putin, he gets replaced by another hardliner. Most likely somebody from FSB (formerly the KGB).

Based on the composition of the Duma, I'd say Russia is more unified now than at any other point in the Russian Federation. Most nation states can only wish for such unity.

I went to the Polish site and read the article.

They say 5.6 million people participated in the survey, which required them to use VPN services.

That’s of 145 million people. It’s at least conceivable 4% of the population might participate in a survey. Maybe. It would exclude babies. So the % required rises.

What % of the US uses VPN services? Apparently about 35%. Surprising, that, and the number comes from a VPN organization so . . . . Anyway given VPNs are not generally free, this 5.6 million participant number is suspect.

Best case for Russia is a quick coup replacing Putin.

Very real chance it will go much worse than that. Putin has let the war in Ukraine be outsourced to series of warlords (Prigozhin, Kadyrov) with their own private armies.

If the center plug fails, expect those armies to begin the battle each other for their slice of Russia.

When one man gets to pick every member of parliament, is it a surprise that that parliament agrees on everything?

Excellent observation. As the EU is fracturing and the US is in turmoil, I can say it appears Russia will be around much longer than many Western nations….but then “ The Kings of the East and Gog” are mentioned in Biblical prophecy.

That said, the West’s boys in girls bathrooms, men in woman sports, gay marriage, trans, LGXYZ love affair, insures destruction by its own hands. India, China and Russia have no time for that filth.

You may be right, but those folks are becoming pretty old to
carry the weight of running a nation. The years are catching
up to all of them.

As for hardliners, there must still be some around as they
still don’t allow open elections any better than our 2020.

I get the feeling they still have 80-90% lopsided elections,
but I may be way off base on that. Putin is still around.

This is his 19th year.

“Five regions want to break away from Russia, referendum shows”

...and 20 or so states would be HAPPY to break away from the bunch in DC, based on opinion polling.

Even if Putin lasts another 10 years, there may be another Putin waiting in the wings to seize power.

In the 90s, no one knew who was Putin. At the time, he was the deputy mayor of St. Petersburg.

Thanks, so a TOTALLY MEANINGLESS ‘poll’. For starters, how many pensioners in Russia use VPNs?

At the moment, but after Putin, the Kadyrovs may eventually lead Chechen independence. Right now Putin is paying them off billions of dollars. No guarantees Putin's successors will do the same.

California wanted to break away until they remembered they’re still in the United States, sort of. But still woke.

I’ve never been one for modern secession.

I believe the only way is to kick states out of OUR Union, not leave it.

California, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Oregon, Washington and Minnesota should all get the boot. Hawaii should have its statehood revoked and made into a territory again.

We should keep naval bases on the west coast like San Diego and Bremerton, like we keep Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.
