David Geffen was born in Borough Park, Brooklyn, New York, to Abraham Geffen and Batya Volovskaya (1909–1988). Geffen’s mother owned a clothing store in Borough Park called Chic Corsets by Geffen.[2] Both of his parents were Jewish immigrants who met in British Mandatory Palestine and then moved to the United States.[3] Geffen graduated from Brooklyn’s New Utrecht High School in 1960 with a “barely passing 66 average”. He attended the University of Texas at Austin for a semester, and then Brooklyn College, before again dropping out. He then moved to Los Angeles, California to find his way in the entertainment business.[4] He attended Santa Monica College (then known as Santa Monica City College) in Santa Monica, California, but soon left. Geffen attributed his challenges in school to dyslexia.

Up to now, my main thought with regards to David Geffen is Geffen Records. Regardless of his involvement at the time of their release, pretty much any remastered music CD under the Geffen Records label sucks. And with that, I’ve arrived full circle.
The brilliant and iconoclastic singer and song writer Laura Nyro was able to escape being outed as bisexual when David Geffen promoted his relationship with her mostly as a kind favor. It ended acrimoniously eventually.
She was a reclusive type who was too sensitive for performing in concerts. You can see her in the Complete Monterey Pop Festival and some present say she was booed and that’s why she left suddenly in tears. Others dispute the boos. Private and misunderstood all her life.
Nyro was rediscovered after her painful death from ovarian cancer, which she hid from people including many friends.
