DeSantis’ Reedy Creek board says Disney stripped its power

LAKE BUENA VISTA — Gov. Ron DeSantis’ handpicked board overseeing Disney World’s government services is gearing up for a potential legal battle over a 30-year development agreement they say effectively renders them powerless to manage the entertainment giant’s future growth in Central Florida.

Ahead of an expected state takeover, the Walt Disney Co. quietly pushed through the pact and restrictive covenants that would tie the hands of future board members for decades, according to a legal presentation by the district’s lawyers on Wednesday.

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s new Board of Supervisors voted to bring in outside legal firepower to examine the agreement, including a conservative Washington, D.C., law firm that has defended several of DeSantis’ culture war priorities.

“We’re going to have to deal with it and correct it,” board member Brian Aungst Jr. said. “It’s a subversion of the will of the voters and the Legislature and the governor. It completely circumvents the authority of this board to govern.”

Disney defended its actions.

“All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate and were discussed and approved in open, noticed public forums in compliance with Florida’s Government in the Sunshine law,” an unsigned company statement read.

How convenient (to get DeSantis out of his jam).

My (totally unsupported) theory is that Disney was looking at offers, from other states, and DeSantis was getting nervous, since losing Disney is the end of his political career.

(yea, I know, it’s ‘too big to move’ - have a look at Detroit if you still think that)

Disney and the previous board caught the state sleeping.

They negotiated and executed this agreement before the new law was signed. It also looks like they did it in the open and followed the rules for disclosure, comment ets.

The state should have anticipated this.

Well if all they can do is stuff like road work then I hope Disney appreciates the new dirt roads they should put in.

What’s ingenious here is that it allows DeSantis to be on both sides of the issue, which is keeping Disney in Florida (by ignoring the power play by the board), while claiming that he’s trying to hold Disney accountable (by saying he will now sue them - which means years of litigation).

Seems to me to reek of a Karl Rove move.

Not only unsupported, but I’m not sure it is coherent nor reflecting anything actually occurring.

"DeSantis was getting nervous, since losing Disney is the end of his political career."

What on Earth are you talking about? This is just made up mudslinging.

Perhaps you should not spend your time commenting on Florida's affairs, and pay attention to your own back yard.

Could be, but I didn’t give him much crap until he came out of the political ‘closet’ last week. Now I look at him very differently.

By the way, did he ever shut down that hotel bar with the Drag Queen show. Last I heard he had people ‘looking into it’?

Why do I get the feeling that the public notice was like the highway construction notice in Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy?

" It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying 'Beware of the Leopard."

You’d be surprised what states will do to get something like Disney. Look up “Stadium” and “EV Battery Plant”, for example.

I gave up on my backyard (Texas), they’re owned BIG TIME by the GOP Money bunch. It’s hopeless here.

“That declaration is valid until “21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, king of England living as of the date of this declaration..”

That’s hilarious.

“All agreements signed between Disney and the district were appropriate”

Appropriate. Really? Referencing the King of Great Britain and his descendants?
