The Chinese spy balloon that flew across the U.S. was able to gather intelligence from several sensitive American military sites, despite the Biden administration’s efforts to block it from doing so, according to two current senior U.S. officials and one former senior administration official.
China was able to control the balloon so it could make multiple passes over some of the sites (at times flying figure eight formations) and transmit the information it collected back to Beijing in real time, the three officials said. The intelligence China collected was mostly from electronic signals, which can be picked up from weapons systems or include communications from base personnel, rather than images, the officials said.
The three officials said China could have gathered much more intelligence from sensitive sites if not for the administration’s efforts to move around potential targets and obscure the balloon’s ability to pick up their electronic signals by stopping them from broadcasting or emitting signals.
The National Security Council referred NBC News to the Defense Department for comment. The Defense Department directed NBC News to comments from February in which senior officials said the balloon had “limited additive value” for intelligence collection by the Chinese government “over and above what [China] is likely able to collect through things like satellites in low earth orbit.”

I’m pretty sure it’s a coincidence, but a day or two after the balloon hovered over Oak Ridge National Lab, our Verizon cell towers were out for 14-16 hours. I don’t know about other providers’ towers.

It says despite attempts to ‘block’ it. I surmise the military tried to jam its electronics and failed.
Amazing how the Chinese balloon story was wiped from the headlines, and not a word about it until now.
They meant “despite the Biden administration’s efforts to block people from noticing that it was gathering intelligence right out in the open and unencumbered."
No effort to block them ever happened. They were allowed to cross the country and only stopped when they had exited the country. Maybe one was stopped after public outcry.
So obvious how the enemedia can change what really happened so quickly.
It was not even needed. All they had to do was call Joe and ask.

It was always going to be a challenge to find people to lie about non existant cameras aboard a weather balloon.
Much easier to make claims about the command and control receiver and data transmit antennae being sigint.
And yes, there was propulsion. If you want your weather asset to stay in one place, you give it station keeping propulsion. Much less expensive than launching over and over when a balloon gets blown wherever.
The reason that weather ministry official was fired is because the failed command and control system sent this large balloon over the US where it obscured satellite vision.
If the US government were serious about blocking it, they would have shot it down BEFORE it crossed the US and gathered all that intel.
They wanted to give the info away because they are intent on destroying this country.
