Rand Paul backed by GOP donor with $33B TikTok stake

Sen. Rand Paul’s heated opposition to a TikTok ban startled Capitol Hill last week, but you could look at it as a straightforward case of following the money, according to insiders – in this case, the money of a major GOP donor who has $33 billion on the line.

The gentleman from Kentucky – who has made his career partly as a China hawk – surprised colleagues on the Senate floor last week when he blocked Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley’s hopes for fast-tracked legislation to ban TikTok.

“Speech is protected whether you like it or not,” Rand said, jumping on Hawley’s proposal as soon as he stopped speaking. “Have faith that our desire for freedom is strong enough to survive a few dance videos.”

Sources claim credit for Paul’s impassioned speech should go to GOP mega donor Jeffrey Yass.

The billionaire CEO of Susquehanna Financial Group has given Paul more than $10 million since 2020, according to election filings.

His fund also owns a 15% stake in TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, that’s worth an estimated $33 billion.

Let’s give the Federal Government unlimited authority to ban all social networks and information providers.

I’m sure they would never abuse that power.

Oh was that the proposed bill, "unlimited authority to ban all social networks"? Okay

More Rupert BS. That bill should have been blocked. It was a Trojan Horse bill that sounded good but was designed to strip the people of their liberty.

Ridiculous BS from the Murdoch owned post.

The problem is not with banning Tik Tok. Trump issued an executive order that would have forced the Chinese owners to divest themselves of Tik Tok.

The problem with this bill is that it gives government the power to censor anyone. We’ve all seen how desperately they want to do this. First there were all the government censors for social media as revealed by the Twitter files.

Then there was the attempt to found a Ministry of Truth.

Now this.

Rand Paul opposition was not against just the bill, he has stated he is against banning Tiktok. So if you proposed a bill JUST banning Tiktok, Paul would be against it.

Correct. Very dangerous. Would make all your data and online presence open to FedGov inspection.

The short answer is YES - this gives the FBI authority to search anyone anytime anywhere for any reason. OKAY?

Fine. Rand Paul has said he opposes banning Tiktok. So, if the ban JUST banned Tiktok, he would be against it.

Yeah, I don't care about his motives - I looked at the merits and flaws of Paul's opposition to the so-called TikTok ban. Rand Paul is right about this. The proposed legislation would give the federal government the power to ban a lot more than TikTok.

It's a weak tactic - when you can't argue with the merits of a person's position, you question his motives. That's what this NY Post columnist is doing. It doesn't change my mind. Maybe the legislation would be overturned in the years or decades to come by the SC, but there could the hundreds or thousands of instances of free speech rights trampled in the meantime.

Tulsi Gabbard 🌺 @TulsiGabbard

The Restrict Act does a lot more than just make it illegal for Americans to use TikTok. It will give unelected bureaucrats the power to make it illegal for Americans to use any other app or website, monitor our every move, censor our online speech, and crush any dissent, all under the guise of “national security”.

Debate is whether Tiktok should be banned. Ron Paul says he is against banning Tiktok, before the bill was presented.
