Nearly all container terminals at the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles are closed after union workers failed to show up to work, officials said.
The work stoppage comes in the midst of labor negotiations between one of the state’s most powerful unions, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, and their employers, represented by the Pacific Maritime Association.
In LA, all seven container terminals were closed Friday, port officials said in an email to the Business Journal. In Long Beach, meanwhile, officials told the Business Journal four out of six terminals are closed, including International Transportation Service on Pier G, Pacific Container Terminal on Pier J, Long Beach Container Terminal on Pier E, and Total Terminals International on Pier T.
According to a statement Thursday from the Pacific Maritime Association, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, Local 13, workers did not show up to shifts Thursday night.
“A majority of the jobs for last night’s shift went unfilled, including all jobs for cargo-handling equipment operators needed to load and unload cargo,” the statement reads. “The workers who did show up were released because there was not a full complement of ILWU members to operate the terminals.”
The PMA stated workers again did not show up for shifts this morning, effectively shutting down the ports.

I can find bupkis on it.
Another devious headline where worker shortage = union strike.
This is terrible news on 2 Fronts. Americans won’t be able to buy as much chinese junk and china will be slower in accumulating our cash to mine their coal and work on destroying us. They might even lose the funding for another weather balloon.

I get the point that your trying to make but thats not the best example.
Proctor & Gamble, Kimberly Clark, and Georgia-Pacific, have their production located in the US and these companies sell 80% of toilet paper on the market. They do have among them some of the crappy brands butt they also produce the best.
When I used to travel, no matter where I went in the world there were two things from home waiting for me when I got there. “Neenah dollars” (manhole covers) and Fort Howard (Georgia Pacific) paper products.
Im surprised its not more.
People out there are paying up around $1,000,000 for the same house on a postage stamp that I could buy on 20+ acres here for $100,000.
Yup—the numbers just don’t work in the large CA metro areas.
That was why I left decades ago—now I have the house and land I wanted—but the weather is not CA for sure...
;-)
Given that their goal is to keep the water clean and not really move stuff, this makes sense. If the close the ports the water will be easier to keep clean.
Hire non-union scabs.
If we had our industrial base back we wouldn’t need to import anything but some raw materials and bananas.
