FSU Criminology Professor Abruptly Leaves After Accusations of Cooking Race Data
The Florida Standard ^

A top Florida State University professor whose research focused on race in the criminal justice system abruptly left his post in the wake of years-long allegations of academic fraud.

A Fellow of the American Society of Criminology, Eric Stewart has had six research studies retracted, blemishing FSU’s top-ranked criminology department. Stewart was first accused of falsifying data in 2019 by Professor Justin Pickett of the University of Albany, who co-authored a 2011 study with Stewart.

The study tested if the public’s prejudicial views impacted their desire for harsher sentences for black and hispanic Americans. The published findings were that as black and hispanic populations grew, so did the public’s want for more discriminatory sentences. Except – Pickett discovered – this was not the case.

In the original data, no relationship was found between growing minority populations and demands for increased sentences. If anything, Pickett pointed out, it was quite the opposite.

Pickett found that their sample size somehow had increased from 500 to over 1,000 respondents, the counties polled had decreased from 326 to 91, and the data was altered to the point of mathematical impossibility.

Fake but accurate.

Reminds me of the 1990s and the supposedly racial reasons why Crack Cocaine users got harsher sentences than power Cocaine users. It was supposed that Crack users tended to be poor minorities, where powder Cocaine users tended to be wealthier whites. Thus, it was racist to sentence Crack users more harshly than powder users.

But the studies didn't take into account the tendency of Crack users to be more likely to engage in violent crime than powder users, and it was this violent crime that resulted in increased punishments

Fraud is rampant at taxpayer supported academic institutions. The politicians have become the masters. The people hired are there to fulfill quotas and when there they come up with results to please their masters so to solidify their positions and enrich themselves. Almost all academic disciplines have been corrupted including professional journals.

$190,000/year for this racist, lying, cheat? While US taxpayers are being asked to pay for people’s student loans? This makes me sick to my stomach.

Our society has way too many people who think of themselves as ‘put upon’ and who thus feel justified in lying and cheating their way in life. They’re just criminals, like any other criminal.

Reminds me of the anti-gun Emory University professor who fabricated data showing almost nobody in America owned a gun prior to the Civil War. When pressed for documentation, he said all his research was lost in a flooded basement. Got handed his walking papers when he couldn’t back up his claims.

This stuff takes years to get proven out. Anyone that puts faith in complex studies less than 5 years old is gullible.
