Russia’s commando units gutted by Ukraine war, U.S. leak shows
The Washington Post ^ | 14 Apr 2023 | Alex Horton

The war in Ukraine has gutted Russia’s clandestine spetsnaz forces, and it will take Moscow years to rebuild them, according to classified U.S. assessments obtained by The Washington Post.

The finding, which has not been previously reported, is among a cache of sensitive materials leaked online through the messaging platform Discord. U.S. officials attributed their assessments to Russian commanders’ overreliance on the specialized units, which have been put to use as part of front-line infantry formations. Those formations, like the Ukrainians, have suffered massive numbers of dead and wounded.

The 22nd and two other spetsnaz brigades suffered an estimated 90 to 95 percent attrition rate, the assessments say.

Compounding Russia’s problems is the loss of experience within its elite forces. Spetsnaz soldiers require at least four years of specialized training, the U.S. documents say, concluding that it could take as long as a decade for Moscow to reconstitute these units.

The documents do not say how many spetsnaz troops are estimated to have been killed or wounded in Ukraine, but the materials, citing intelligence intercepts, assess that one unit alone — the 346th — “lost nearly the entire brigade with only 125 personnel active out of 900 deployed.”

If it’s about the intelligence community and it is from the Washington Post then this must be true.

So they caught the leaker, and are leaking more classified info to the Washington Post to counteract his leaks. Good thing that their employees at the Washington Post and New York Times can facilitate this propaganda dump to counteract the stuff that Texiera leaked. Should we call this the “Leaker’s Challenge? (like the dueling banjos of ‘Deliverance’ fame?)”

The WaPo source is a “leak”. Probably from a unnamed source. Most likely a janitor at Target overheard a customer telling about it as being heard from her third uncle’s live-in girl friend’s husband’s kid who read it in a chat room. So it’s gotta be true.

“WaPo shares classified docs with its readers = the American people have a right to know!”

Well, yeah, that’s the 1st Amendment for you. Once the intel is “in the wild”, journalists are free to publish it. And you are free to republish it, as you are doing right here in this thread.

I am skeptical about everything. However, I do believe that the performance of the Russian military last year in the Ukraine was on par with the 1941 Russians (not good) and they did lose a lot of their newest equipment and best units.

OTOH - I think many of us thought this long before these classified assessments were leaked.

“and are leaking more classified info”

No, this is from the info that was already leaked.

No, we know the source, he was arrested yesterday. This isn’t a new leak, it’s from Texeira.

Where, exactly, are all these other documents?

Why is ONLY the Washington Post reporting on the details, if the are supposedly in the public domain already?

The 6 or 7 documents showing the state of Ukraine/Russian forces were spread quickly and widely, and even posted within articles here on FR.

Why not these other documents?

Very strange. Another feint from America’s massive intelligence deep state?

According to WaPo, this particular classified info has not been publicly reported.

Did WaPo get copies of the classified docs from the “intel community” or from the discord server?

WaPo doesn’t say, and given their history of leaking whatever secrets the intel community wants them to, I would bet it’s more likely the former.

How are you so confident in your assessment of Russian Federation military performance, given these leaks show the casualty ratio as 7:1 in favor of the Russians?

I decided early on not to believe either side as reported in media outlets...

The sooner people refuse to believe Biden and his media, the better off the US will be.

So now the WaPoo is sharing the “top secret” info.

Yeah, you know you could read the whole sentence though:

“The finding, which has not been previously reported, is among a cache of sensitive materials leaked online through the messaging platform Discord.”

It’s part of the same leak, it just was not “previously reported” by any other news outlet. They are probably all digging through the fairly massive amount of material that was leaked and hoping to “scoop” each other by publishing the juicy bits first.

Yes, but Joey said the media are not to report it. *clearing throat*

My guess is that it is the “intel community” that is giving these docs to WaPo and not that WaPo was given the docs by video gamers who were Discord members.

The efforts you and WaPo are going to in order to defend Biden’s lies are apparent.

“digging through the fairly massive amount of material that was leaked”

That’s probably the impression they would like to give, but we know MSM reporters are lazy and stupid and prefer to be force fed things by their intel community handlers.

YES. I'll happily admit I am wrong if I see these "other documents" - but I don't think there really was a release of them. WaPo's reporting on them could be completely "fake news."

they already have a small release on their hands of those few Ukraine documents, but why not spin the issue, and issue fake news to one's advantage?
