Customers unknowingly purchased food items with sewing needles hidden inside after a juvenile employee inserted the needles into groceries, according to police in Pennsylvania.
Troopers with Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville said they were called to the Giant store in Trexlertown on Wednesday, April 19, after customers returned groceries with sewing needles.
A spokesperson with Giant told McClatchy News the company learned of the “product integrity issue” on April 17 and “immediately investigated.”
The company then contacted authorities “for further action and investigation,” she said in a written statement.
“Based on an internal investigation and surveillance video, an employee – now former employee – appeared to insert a sewing needle into at least three known food items, which were found to have sewing needles,” the spokesperson continued.
A teen worker will face charges, police said. Those charges had not been filed as of April 20.
“The safety of our customers is GIANT’S top priority,” the company statement says. “Out of an abundance of caution, the company has removed some products from shelves at its Trexlertown store. The categories believed to be affected include: single serve Tastykakes, fresh bagged green beans, loose sweet yellow and white onions, fresh green asparagus, soft packaged dog food and treats, soft packaged cat food and treats, instant mashed potatoes (boxed) and cleaning sponges.”
State police authorities ask anyone who purchased groceries from the store between April 13 and April 19 to check their items for signs of tampering.
If you suspect product tampering or purchased any of the affected items from the Trexlertown store, Giant said you should notify authorities and return your products for a full refund.

Trexlertown used to be real Amish before the feds ran them off. I baled hay every summer there. Thousands of acres every summer. My hands bled. I also learned about Amish Daughters in their teens. Much of the hay we sold and then delivered to the race tracks in Philadelphia.
How about one count of attempted murder per needle inserted?
They didn’t mention the name of the perp. Interesting.
Normally juvenile offenders are not named in the press.

A while ago an unhinged young man surreptitiously put liquid poison on the food in the supermarket salad bar. People were going to the hospital. At first they didn’t know it was the salad bar and other possibilities (bakery, takeout hot chicken and beef, packaged foods) had to be looked into as more got badly sick. Store threw out the salade bar food and started fresh after scouring the setup. But it happened again and more people were sickened.
Finally a video showed the culprit. His inner sleeve had a squeeze container with a point to direct the clear liquid poison.
His mother defended him as a good but troubled son (an adult but lived with mom, totally mentally ill) and he got mandatory outpatient mental health counseling scheduled for once per week for I think it was six months. No prison time.
Socialism, ain’t it grand? The Saul Alinsky/Soros/Dem plan all along. Grandchildren of Marx and Lenin.
Since that has the potential to kill the perp should be tried for attempted murder.

Childhood is sort of a dream state, where most everything is pretend. The transition to "oh, I'm now a real person and can do real damage in the world" doesn't always go well. This juvenile chose an odd FAFO on ramp to reality.
