Let’s face it: Many armed Americans are deathly — and irrationally — afraid of others. And so they have become a menace to the rest of us.
According to a 2021 Gallup Poll, as many as 88 percent of gun owners are apparently terrified of being harmed, since they say the guns are for self-defense.
Yet very, very few gun owners end up defending themselves and their families from the sort of random crime they fear. According to The Trace, fewer than 3 percent of gun owners ever use a weapon in self-defense, and apparently some of those involve misrepresentation of what actually happened in order to paint the shooter in a good light.
Of course, the media — especially, but certainly not only, the likes of Fox — have played a large role in convincing an element of our society that they are in constant mortal danger. It’s totally false, but if all you do all day is consume random horror stories, your grip on reality becomes distorted. That is one reason for the current insanity, and we in the media need to acknowledge that and fight against it.
And of course the GOP probably would not hold any significant power in this country if they did not psychologically terrorize their base.

He’s unhappy very few gun owners end up defending themselves and their families from the sort of random crime they fear. Maybe he wants everyone do be in genuine danger of random crime.
I think his figures are wrong.....
EVEN IF I didn’t actually get pushed into firing-—I did use a weapon in self defense.
Would have fired if intruder hadn’t turned & left my property.
Would NOT change a thing if it happened again.
BUT I WILL PROTECT MYSELF
I think the author has it bass ackwards. He and HIS kind have an irrational fear of us. WE ARE NOT THE PROBLEM.

I’ll finish reading this excellent and well-reasoned article after I get back from my boating excursion.
A lot of gun owners might respond:
“Come and take it!”
By his logic sprinkler systems have to go as far less than 3% are ever used to put out a fire. Just call the FD and let the pros do their job.
I can think of 400 million reasons why this is impossible.

I’ve had to produce a weapon 2 times in my life. Did not have to fire in either incident.
This freak can put his opinions where the sun don’t shine.
And the 3% figure [if not watered down] means 2.3 million successful defenses with guns.
Typical screed from a weak leftist mind. “Deathly afraid”? I do not keep fire extinguishers around because I’m deathly afraid of fire. I do it because I’m prudent.
