I have a fire extinguisher I have never used, and like a gun it is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. I also have home owners insurance and car insurance I’ve never needed, but it is nice to know they are there.

Funny how the same people who insist everyone get a covid vax because you have about a one in a million chance of dying from covid have ice water in their veins when it comes to somebody else being a crime victim.

“Of course, the media — especially, but certainly not only, the likes of Fox — have played a large role in convincing an element of our society that they are in constant mortal danger.”

Danger from a Global Warming apocalypse? He mustn’t mean that. Covid? No, not that either. Russia, Russia, Russia? Nope.

Right Wing conspiracy theorists? Well, that would be the mortal danger that *he’s* selling.

Even the extremely anti-gun CDC found more than 1,000,000 defensive gun uses per year.

I wonder if Russ Baker carries a spare tire in his car and if so, why.

Let’s face it: Many armed Americans are deathly — and irrationally — afraid of others.

Straw man. No need to read further.

I noticed the same thing.
First, Russ Baker claims that it is irrational to fear violent crime.
Next he insists there is so much to fear from law-abiding citizens, that they must be stripped of their Constitutional rights.
Pick one argument or the other, you can’t have it both ways. Russ needs to stop being so “divisive”.

Another red diaper baby: Baker grew up in Venice, California. His father, Len Baker, was a systems analyst in the aerospace industry who quit to join the peace movement and one summer sent him to work on a “work farm.” His father’s politics “rubbed off on Baker,...

I got myself a conceal carry purse (yes, I’m a woman) and now carry my Glock everywhere. I’ve been in Costco, Walmart, bars & restaurants, and church while carrying and simply ignore the signs. I refuse to be defenseless any longer.

The 2nd Amendment was, first and foremost, meant to allow “the people” to defend themselves against a tyrannical government.

Maybe the author would like to volunteer to round up some of those guns.

I'll post the most delicious part from his Wikipedia entry:

Personal life

Baker has declined to disclose his age, marital status, names of family members, or "anything that would make him more vulnerable to covert surveillance, intimidation, or worse."

He also declines to state where he lives or works because he does “sensitive investigative work” and doesn't want people showing up at his door.

======================

Something tells me that he has guns, too - lots of guns.

They're just not for peasants like you or me.

as many as 88 percent of gun owners are apparently terrified of being harmed

Actually I would say the percentage approaches 100 and it doesn't matter if you own a gun or not. Unless you're like the Black Knight in Monty Python and when you have an arm hacked off you say it's just a flesh wound. King Arthur rightly summed him up as a looney.
