Ukraine’s military has set up positions on the eastern side of the Dnipro River near Kherson city, the Institute for the Study of War cites Russian military bloggers as saying.
Infiltrating the area could be a first step towards trying to dislodge Russian forces from positions they are using to shell and shoot at Kherson. The constant attacks have made it impossible for residents to return to normal life months after Ukrainian troops liberated the city from occupation.
Ukrainian military forays across the river could also mark the first tentative steps towards launching a long-awaited spring offensive to reclaim more territory.
“This is the first time ISW has observed reliable geolocated imagery of Ukrainian positions on the east bank along with multi-sourced Russian reports of an enduring Ukrainian presence there,” the thinktank said in an update.
The Russian military bloggers said Ukrainian forces had established stable supply lines to their positions and “regularly conduct sorties in the area”, the ISW said.
The reported positions were in marshy areas of islets and tributaries near the settlements of Oleshky and Dachi, the report said. Russia still holds those settlements.
A Ukrainian military spokesperson for the southern region declined to comment on reports that Ukrainian troops had achieved a foothold across the river.

Maybe it’s a distraction. Maybe a way to ID Russian firing positions.
I certainly understand the psychology of “Our country has been invaded, we need to take back our land, let’s have a big offensive and push the Russians out.”
But in reality, an offensive push is a really good way to lose men and equipment. The Russians would dig in to defensive positions and deplete the Ukrainian assault. In fact, I’m not sure Ukraine has all that many soldiers left.
This “Ukrainian offensive” talk has me scratching my head. I think they will just lose faster. I think they are devastating their own country. And have been for many months.

Standard formula for an offensive is to outnumber the enemy 5 to 1. Does Ukraine have those sorts of numbers? Think of WWI — the offensives across no man’s land were deadly (to the attacker). Think of the Battle of Iwo Jima, or Okinawa. Or Gettysburg, and Pickett’s charge. Offensives can certainly be required, but there is no question they can be costly to the attacker. Especially when the defender loves artillery the way the Russians love artillery.
I don’t picture the Ukrainian army, at this point, being over-filled with hundreds of thousands of able-bodied young men aged 18 to 24 with loads of high quality training.
I’m just saying that a depleted army going on the offensive is going to lose a lot of men. Are you seriously going to say that statement is incorrect?
