I’m old enough to remember Ronald Reagan refusing to debate the other GOP candidates prior to the 1980 Iowa caucuses. He got his clock cleaned by George H.W. Bush in that election. To his credit, he then showed up to debate in the New Hampshire debate a couple weeks later and buried the field shortly thereafter. Trump is making a strategic blunder on this one.
