Russia's Lavrov condemned while chairing United Nations Security Council
Washington Examiner ^ | 24 April 2023 | Joel Gehrke

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov faced a chorus of condemnations over the invasion of Ukraine at the United Nations Security Council, where he sought to cast Moscow as the defender of international law while chairing the proceedings despite Russia’s attempt to seize Ukrainian territory.

“None of the pretexts invoked to attack Ukraine in violation of the U.N. Charter has legal merit, not one of them,” said Hernan Perez Loose, Ecuador’s ambassador to the United Nations, through a U.N. interpreter.

...United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at the opening of the debate. “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in violation of the United Nations Charter and international law, is causing massive suffering and devastation to the country and its people "

..."How could we neglect to recognize Russia's vast contribution, including that made by its major cultural torchbearers — Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Pushkin, or Pasternak?” Perez Loose asked.

“But is there any way we could imagine, for even a minute, that those cultural envoys would be in agreement with the death and pain that this absurd war is inflicting upon millions of people?”

Mr. President.

What better result could this debate have than a decision on the part of your country to put an end to its military aggression against Ukraine, in accordance with the decision handed down by the international court of justice on the 16th of March 2022?

What better legacy could there be of your presidency, than if your government chose to return to the path of peace and to withdraw its occupying troops? None of the pretext invoked to attack Ukraine in violation of the UN Charter Have legal merit, not one of them.

In this chamber:

We've been told for example, that the invasion of Ukraine is a response to a supposed phobia that exists of Russian culture. We've been told that this invasion is a response to a supposed Western conspiracy to weaken Russia. We've been told that Russia is acting in self-defence in response to anti-russian policies imposed by Ukraine on certain inhabitants. None of these arguments have any grounding in the UN Charter it goes without saying - we must remember that the Charter is one indivisible and Universal.

Mr. President there is not a United Nations Charter for the West, another for the East, another for the North, and another for the South.

There is not a United Nations Charter for Muslims. another for Christians, and other for Jews. We also can't talk about a charter for Africa another for Europe, another for America, and so on.

No Mr. President, the charter is, I repeat one charter - it is indivisible and universal.

How could we neglect to recognise Russia's vast contribution, including that made by its major cultural torchbearers: Tolstoy, Dostoevsky Pushkin or Boris Pasternak. But is there any way we could imagine, for even a minute, that those cultural envoys would be in agreement with the death and pain that this absurd war is inflicting upon millions of people?

"he sought to cast Moscow as the defender of international law"

LOL! They even violated Russian law by invading Ukraine:

Chapter 34. Crimes Against the Peace and Security Mankind

Article 353. Planning, Preparing, Unleashing, or Waging on Aggressive War

1. Planning, preparing, or unleashing an aggressive war shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term of seven to fifteen years.

2. Waging an aggressive war shall be punishable by deprivation of liberty for a term of 10 to 20 years.

Russian Federation Criminal Code

At least they had a UN pretext. We didn’t bother to even get a fake one for Kosovo and bombing the hell out of Serbia, for the attack on Libya, and for our ongoing attempt to overthrow the government in Syria. Ecuador is a wholly-owned CIA subsidiary government.

Laws are all in the interpretation. There is a right of preemptive war. I’m sure Russian lawyers interpret the law that way. You are sure you’re right - they’re sure you’re wrong.

You aren’t right because you feel this war is wrong. Emotions aren’t arguments. Nor are speeches by UN officials. Right and wrong are maters of opinion, not fact. It doesn’t matter what you or the world thinks - a sovereign nation can invade anyone at any time. It’s sovereign, not subject to any law but its own.

The only real law is the law of the jungle, so if you feel Russia is wrong, go and fight them, or hold your peace. They will kill you and have already killed many better men than you. Take care of your family, enjoy your life and shut up, little man.

“You are sure you’re right - they’re sure you’re wrong.”

Yes, but only one of us is actually right. Lawyers can lawyer all they want, but there is only one truth.

“It’s sovereign, not subject to any law but its own.”

And that’s my point. Russia violates even their own laws, hence it’s laughable for them to pretend they care one whit about international law, much less that they are a defender of such.

“or hold your peace”

Sorry, comrade, this isn’t Russia, this is the USA and I’ll say whatever I want.

Doesn’t matter if we intended to keep them, or just install a puppet government. We attacked them. UN law of war doesn’t differentiate. The illegal attack air raids, invasion is the point. In the Donbass, they and Lugansk declared independence. Then asked for assistance.
All very legal.
Remember, the people in the Donbass opted out of the coup in Kiev. When you throw a coup, you only own what you can grab by force and nothing more. You do not magically inherit an entire country because you stormed the capital with a mob.
Everyone else across the dead country has the same exact rights to self self determination that the Kiev mob did.

We didn’t bother to even get a fake one for Kosovo and bombing the hell out of Serbia

guess you forgot about how Serbia was using the former Yugoslav army to attack every newly-declared neighboring state around it (i.e., behaving just like Russia)

plus, there was also Milosevic and the massacres of more than 8000 Bosnians, which was officially declared a genocide by the UN General Assembly, the US Congress, AND the International Criminal Court ...

read up on History a bit ...

There is no actual right, because there is no objective right or wrong. Are you right? Prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, logically with all steps provided. I’ll be waiting.

When I said hold your peace I meant don’t go to war. Of course you can speak whatever nonsense you wish- it has no power to change anything. What I clearly meant was make your peace with Russia, unless you’re willing to go there and fight. And if you do, yes they will kill you. All the international fighters have fled after their volunteer bravado, because there was nothing there but death.

If you commit aggression against another party can you blame them? They never attacked you. The Russians will kill you like a street dog, and if this thing escalates they will kill your family, friends and me and mine too. Is that your goal, tough guy?

“because there is no objective right or wrong”

That’s the sentiment of a fool. There is objective right and wrong, because there is God, and God defines it. Deny that and you’re just lost.

“Prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt, logically with all steps provided.”

Nothing of any consequence can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, logically, with all steps provided. You cannot even prove to me that you exist under such conditions. So once again, this is just foolishness.

“When I said hold your peace I meant don’t go to war.”

Strange, I’ve never heard the phrase used that way in the English language, but I’ll take you at your word.

“What I clearly meant was make your peace with Russia...”

What does this even mean? I am not at war with Russia. But I shall not refrain from stating the truth about them. If you don’t like it, then I suggest you find a way to accept it, since I have no intention of stopping.
