Back in my day the High School Assistant Principal was the one with the large paddle mounted on the wall behind his desk. (You know, the one with “speed holes” drilled in it...)

When you don't punish criminal activity you get more of it. I didn't read the whole article so I didn't see if it was boys or girls who assaulted the woman. I think it was females because of the hair pulling but you never know.

Ours had signatures and comments on it. “Hardest licks I ever had.”

Yep. Paddling was a core duty of an Assistant Principal in Texas schools including Houston “back in the day”. I know that for a fact but only got it once myself.

Mr. Riddle, the English teacher, had the paddle mounted on the wall. It had holes in it, to make it sting.

“large paddle... with speed holes”

My father was a Principal in the 60’s and he had exactly that tool hanging on his wall.

It was a different time.

It was tradition in our Jr high shop class to make the best paddle for the principal to use next year

Where I went to school, it was the PE coach. You did not want to have a “meeting” with the PE coach.

Yep, in those days the principal was just a figurehead/administrator. The The Asst. Principal was the schools “enforcer”, the badazz disciplinarian that kept your butt on the straight and narrow.
