‘The Godfather of A.I.’ Leaves Google and Warns of Danger Ahead
DNYUZ | NYT ^ | 5/1/2023

Geoffrey Hinton was an artificial intelligence pioneer. In 2012, Dr. Hinton and two of his graduate students at the University of Toronto created technology that became the intellectual foundation for the A.I. systems that the tech industry’s biggest companies believe is a key to their future.

On Monday, however, he officially joined a growing chorus of critics who say those companies are racing toward danger with their aggressive campaign to create products based on generative artificial intelligence, the technology that powers popular chatbots like ChatGPT.

Dr. Hinton said he has quit his job at Google, where he has worked for more than decade and became one of the most respected voices in the field, so he can freely speak out about the risks of A.I. A part of him, he said, now regrets his life’s work.

See also Max Tegmark: The Case for Halting AI Development | Lex Fridman Podcast #371 .

Very good discussion by a couple of proven experts in the AI field. Tegman's book Life 3.0 has a great description of the perils.

Oh, NOW he has partial regrets.

Too late.....you’ve sealed your deal.

I tend to agree.

They had decades to contemplate outcomes.

This isn’t a spontaneous “oops” moment

He knows how much farther they are in the labs.
The elites don’t think they are going to lose control of this.
They don’t understand that another will take control and they will be as controlled as we are.

The elites don’t think they are going to lose control of this.

~~~
The rewards is greater than the risk, as far as they are concerned.
Forgive me, because I didn’t click the link, so I have no idea what the primary these is about AI other than vaguely it could be ‘dangerous’, but there is one thing that I noticed about all these AI tools and chat bots. You can’t use them without logging in. You cannot use them anonymously.
The elites what ultimate data aggregation on the population, and they’ve wanted it for a long time. Look at how old the Cambridge Analytica scandal is.
They no longer just want to pool everything together from social media activity, genetic profiles, political activity, and financial transactions in some big, crude, slow database. It is my believe that they want to use AI to know not just what everyone is searching for, in real time, but to know what they are working on, and to know what they are thinking. Real time. They will build profiles on people that will know people faaaaar better than they know even themselves. They will have extensive reports on peoples proclivities, and they will use the AI part for predictive purposes. Not just predicting individuals future thoughts and activities, but build intensive social ecologies, both for prediction as well as for MANPULATION.
Elites?
This makes people with powerful media company drool! The ability to manipulate the global zeitgeist all social and political facets will be extreme.
Also kind of like Musk’s idea of starting a TruthGPT. The current chatgpt is trained by a bunch of leftists. The only AI that might not get out of hand (say the end goal turns out to be exterminate all conservatives, and then nobody turns out not harboring a tiny bit of conservative thought so they are a danger and have to go also...) of these AIs is one that tells the truth and nothing but the truth.
But anything that only tells the truth surely wouldn’t end up very popular as it is the little white lies that get us all through the day ;-)
Perhaps the Godfather of AI should try to figure out some solutions to the problems he sees on the AI horizon. Because he sure as hell isn’t going to stop the development of AI by quitting.
There are three big dangers that I see with AI.
1. In China, the surveillance system is so advanced that you can be fined on the spot for any wrongdoings. It catches you right away. The elites will use AI to do that, especially since they will put everybody on a subsistence and your inability to confirm to the state’s demands can leave you without the ability to buy needs or pay your rent.
2. The AI may develop a form of independent intelligence. It’s a machine, so it’s not going to develop real intelligence. However, it only needs a form of intelligence to prove a danger to us. Give it a basic drive for survival and let it evolve and it will develop defense mechanism that prevent it from being unplugged.
3. The elites think that they are the masters of their domain. They don’t believe that they are pawns to the god of this earth, who hates humans and want to replace us with a creation of his own.
You read it here first: Just like the devil can take over an Ouija Board, demons can gain control of large language models implemented on neural networks. This is how surprising and poorly understood instances of novel intelligent behavior are occurring.
I’ve wondered about that and you have confirmed it. Easy for Satan to put “ghosts in the machine”!
It is a classical philosophers’ phrase that came about as philosophers in the late 1800’s and 1900’s tried to examine the “mind body” problem in terms of human thought and consciousness. You are as free to use the term as any one else could.
However, it only needs a form of intelligence to prove a danger to us. Give it a basic drive for survival and let it evolve and it will develop defense mechanism that prevent it from being unplugged.
What exactly does this mean...”give it a basic drive for survival?” How is that done to a device or machine?
How will it “evolve...and develop a defense mechanism?”
And how could any machine or device “prevent it(self) from being unplugged?”
It sounds like you’re conferring the awareness and perception utilized by organic, sentient beings and organisms for survival - onto a device or machine.
It isn’t possible to do this, but the concept proves very successful in scaring the crap out of a lot of (misinformed) people.
The “AI will take over and control us” mantra is just a manipulation to get people frightened and compliant to surrender even more of their freedom.
The global cabal wants people to think that AI is an existential threat - because will absolve them of all responsibility when things go south. I mean, when they use AI to intentionally cause crisis after crisis in the world, and then blame AI - which they, and only they - will control.
