The intent is disruption of the oil supply. Iran supports one of the factions, has supported piracy (including the IRGC gangsters' recent tanker seizures) and terrorism, and whatever faction (if not both, that's also not unheard of from the mullahcracy) Iran supports needs to be completely eliminated.
