'I told him I couldn't be there because I have this going on:' Biden claims he couldn't attend Charles' coronation due to cozy MSNBC interview - but says he'll meet king after NATO summit

President Joe Biden brushed his decision not to attend King Charles III's coronation on Saturday during a softball interview with MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle by saying: 'I told him I couldn't be there because I have this going on.'

Biden, 80, said that he told the king that he would be in the United Kingdom during the summer during the NATO conference. 'He's a good acquaintance and we've worked together on environmental issues,' the president said of King Charles III.

The president dispatched his wife to represent the US at the celebrations in London. No American president has ever attended a British coronation. First Lady Jill Biden's first stop was a meeting with Akshata Murty, the wife of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

I'm rather certain that King Charles is relieved knowing that Biden won't be there.

Did he define “this” or was that in reference to the “interview” - out of sight out of mind.

Apparently Jill is over there. Which begs the question: Who is feeding and cleaning up after Pedo Joe and changing hos nappies? Does he even know she’s gone?

Coronation isn’t that common so we can’t call it tradition, but the absence of American presidents goes all the way back to American independence.

Until Queen Victoria, the relationship between America and Britain was somewhat antagonistic. Irish American republicans had additional reasons not to celebrate coronations in person. Plus, journeys across the Atlantic weren’t without risk.

The advent of flight and the thawing of relations made attendance more possible.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was formally invited to Queen Elizabeth’s coronation but chose not to didn’t attend, setting the formal precedent in the modern age.

US President gets invited, and declines. That’s a good tradition I think... Confirms the friendship between the countries while celebrating the right of an American president to say no to the monarch.

Is the Secret Service sworn to silence here regarding Joe’s infirmities while under their watch? Do we hear nothing of what his day to days mental and physical struggles must be like to witness?

I imagine the real reason FJB didn’t go was because he had a severe case of Montezuma’a Revenge from those “breakfast tacos” he ate at the Tacorear to celebrate Sinko Duh Mayo.
