Chile’s Conservative Parties to Lead Constitution Rewrite

Chile: major blow to president as far right triumphs in key constitution vote

Chile’s far right has won an emphatic victory in a vote to select the committee that will rewrite its dictatorship-era constitution, after José Antonio Kast’s Republican party secured 22 of its 50 seats in a major blow to the progressive president Gabriel Boric.

Boric beat Kast, an ultra-conservative lawyer often compared to Brazil’s former leader Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2021 presidential election.

But on Sunday night it was Kast who was celebrating after 35% of voters backed Republicanos, the extreme-right party he founded in 2019.

“This is an earthquake in Chilean politics,” the Chilean journalist Rocío Montes wrote in El País, noting how Chile’s left had secured only 17 places on the council, meaning it would be unable to veto right-wing changes. Another right-wing coalition won 11 seats.

Kast celebrated Sunday’s result as “a new start” for his South American country.

Sorry, but I don’t follow this in detail

What exactly is wrong with the “pinochet-era constitution?” That both leftists and conservatives seemingly want to re-write it?

I’d rather see Chile return to the days of Augusto Pinochet then go down the path of Venezuela and Hugo Chavez!

...Chile’s “Augusto Pinochet” Constitution...

It's been so massively amended that it could hardly be called anymore the "Pinochet Constitution."

In fact one nice upshot of Sunday's vote is that this assembly could draft a new Constitution that's MORE law and order than what's currently in place.

Would a revised constitution be more Pinochet without the Pinochet? Just remember the lefty won last time. It’s the eternal vigilance element the conservatives need address more. Our rats called Reagan a war monger and all he did was bring down the Soviets without war.

It sounds like the people of Chile don’t want a Soviet-era constitution that is full of a million rights for a million different groups but isn’t worth the paper it is written on.

Leftists wanted to change it, to, obviously, impose hardcore socialism.

We have to change the Pinochet Constitution. They thought it was a good slogan, especially because it had the word Pinocher. Everyone who opposes it has to be a follower of Mussolini.

The right didn’t want to change it but the left started the process and made voting mandatory.

That’s what I read on 4chan. I don’t read news articles with the words far-right.

The right won with veto proof majority. People have to vote about whether they approve the proposed Constitution.

“Far-right” = sensible, probably Christian, definitely patriotic, opposed to satanist-leftists. This article gives us plenty of good reasons to question the political prejudices of “tom phillips.”
